Volcanic lava cave habitats are extreme environments. We carried out field investigations for five years and reported the results of bryophyte diversity in eight volcanic lava caves of Jingpo Lake World Geopark, where the largest underground lava caves ...

Icelandic analogs to Martian flood lavas [PDF]
We report on new field observations from Icelandic lava flows that have the same surface morphology as many Martian flood lava flows. The Martian flood lavas are characterized by a platy-ridged surface morphology whose formation is not well understood ...

Autonomous thermal camera system for monitoring the active lava lake at Erebus volcano, Antarctica [PDF]
In December 2012, the Mount Erebus Volcano Observatory installed a thermal infrared camera system to monitor the volcano's active lava lake. The new system is designed to be autonomous, and capable of capturing images of the lava lake continuously ...

Evidence of Quaternary tectonics along Río Grande valley, southern Malargüe fold and thrust belt, Mendoza, Argentina [PDF]
The Malargüe fold and thrust belt is developed in the Argentinian Andes between 34° and 37° S, through the tectonic inversion of Upper Triassic and Lower Jurassic depocenters of the Neuquén Basin, with an uplift history since the Cretaceous.

Thermal convection in lava lakes
In magma reservoirs, large temperature contrasts imply large variations of viscosity. We determine the characteristics of thermal convection in the laboratory for viscosity ratios of up to 106. In a fluid layer cooled from the top, convection develops below a stagnant lid.

Dynamics of the Mount Nyiragongo lava lake [PDF]
AbstractThe permanent and presently rising lava lake at Mount Nyiragongo constitutes a major potential geological hazard to the inhabitants of the Virunga volcanic region in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. Based on two field campaigns in June 2010 and 2011, we estimate the lava lake level from the southeastern crater rim (~400 m ...
