Imaging Lava Tubes for Engineering Design
Symposium on the Application of Geophysics to Engineering and Environmental Problems 2008, 2008In Hawaii, lava tubes are a significant concern to highway construction and maintenance projects not only for the long-term durability of the road surface, but also for the immediate safety of the construction crews and public. Prior knowledge of the location and depth of lava tubes can greatly aid in the design of engineering structures to improve ...

Magnetic field changes on lava flow to detect lava tubes
Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 1995Abstract During the 1991–1993 Etna eruption (Italy) seven surveys of the total geomagnetic field intensity were carried out on two traverses, ca. 80 m long, of the active flow, where it displayed evidence for the presence of a lava tube underneath. This experiment aimed at evaluating the efficiency of magnetic surveys in detecting the presence of ...

The Journal of Geology, 1929
The general form is shown in Figure I, and suggests that of the broken petrified trees in some of the national parks. A cross-section, as in Figure 2, shows bands of vesicles that are much like the growth rings of trees. Close examination shows that the bands do not go completely around and close on themselves as tree rings do.

Submarine lava tubes and channels
Bulletin of Volcanology, 1986High-resolution, side-looking sonar surveys of the East Pacific rise and seamounts in the eastern Pacific have revealed the common presence of lava tubes and channels in seafloor volcanic terrains. Tube and channel systems commonly issue from small volcanic cones or domes, are continuous for distances of 1–3 km, and are considered to be important in ...

Lava tube morphology on Etna and evidence for lava flow emplacement mechanisms
Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 1999Lava tubes play a pivotal role in the formation of many lava flow fields. A detailed examination of several compound ‘a‘a lava flow fields on Etna confirmed that a complex network of tubes forms at successively higher levels within the flow field, and that tubes generally advance by processes that include flow inflation and tube coalescence.

The different characteristics of three lava tubes in Tenerife, Canary Islands, are analysed. Cueva del Viento-Sobrado, Cueva de Felipe Reventon and Cueva de los Roques were formed by an eruption of Pico Viejo volcano 27,000 years ago. Geological features of this basaltic lava flow and special topographic aspects of its caves are explained.

The structural stability of lunar lava tubes
Icarus, 2017Abstract Mounting evidence from the SELENE, LRO, and GRAIL spacecraft suggests the presence of vacant lava tubes under the surface of the Moon. GRAIL evidence, in particular, suggests that some may be more than a kilometer in width. Such large sublunarean structures would be of great benefit to future human exploration of the Moon, providing shelter ...

Pressurized lunar lava tubes for habitation
2022Lava tubes are subterranean tubes that form as a result of lava flows and extend for long distances beneath the surface of a planet. They are a naturally occurring feature of Earth’s Moon. For decades these cave systems have piqued the interest of researchers, not just for their geological complexity, but also for their potential as a future human ...

Thermoelastic deformation associated with a lava tube
Bulletin of Volcanology, 2008Active lava tubes have much higher temperatures than the surrounding rocks. Any change in the tube temperature produces a change in the temperature distribution in the rocks and induces a thermoelastic deformation in them. We calculate such a deformation by solving the equilibrium equation of linear thermoelasticity.
