Lava caves of the Republic of Mauritius, Indian Ocean [PDF]
In their Underground Atlas, MIDDLETON & WALTHAM (1986) dismissed Mauritius as: “very old volcanic islands with no speleological interest”. Recent investigations indicate this judgement is inaccurate; there are over 50 significant caves, including lava ...

We examine the morphology and chemistry of the Vikrahraun basaltic eruption emplaced at Askja Volcano, Iceland, from Oct. 26–Dec. 17, 1961. The eruption had three eruptive events, initiating with aʻa and followed by alternating aʻa and pahoehoe lava flow

ABSTRACT Since 2000, archaeological excavations have brought to light the sanctuary of Athena in Castro (Apulia, Italy), including terracotta roofs dated between the 6th and 4th centuries bce. Based on their morphological and stylistic features, it is suggested that the terracotta items were manufactured in the Greek colony of Taras (modern Taranto ...

Overview of the CHILL-ICE 2021 Science Experiments and Research Campaign
The main objective of the CHILL-ICE (Construction of a Habitat Inside a Lunar-analogue Lava tube—Iceland; a campaign by ICEE Space and EuroMoonMars) prototype mission was to deploy an inflatable habitat and its systems inside a lunar analogue lava tube ...

Representation of obligate groundwater‐dwelling copepod diversity in European protected areas
Abstract Groundwaters sustain diverse surface ecosystems and are populated by metazoan species, mostly invertebrates, that provide fundamental ecological functions and are often of prominent conservation value due to narrow endemism and high phylogenetic rarity.

Cry me a Pele’s tear: new insights on the internal structures of Pele’s tears
In this paper we present novel observations of internal structures of Pele’s tears and spheres revealed from SEM studies of particles formed within Kilauean lava fountains.

Flow and convective cooling in lava tubes [PDF]
Tube‐fed basaltic lava flows with lengths ranging from 10 to 200 km are inferred to exhibit similar amounts of cooling. To explain the wide range of implied cooling rates, we consider forced convection as a dominant cooling process in lava tubes and present solutions that express mean temperature versus distance down the tube as a function of flow rate
