Crime, Isolation and Law Enforcement.

open access: yes, 2004
This paper investigates the relationship between criminal activity and geographical isolation. Using data from Madagascar, we show that, after we control for population composition and risk factors, crime increases with distance from urban centres and, with few exceptions, decreases with population density.

Cross-Border Law Enforcement: Regional Law Enforcement Cooperation - European, Australian and Asia-Pacific Perspectives

open access: yes, 2012
This innovative volume explores issues of law enforcement cooperation across borders from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. In doing so it adopts a comparative framework hitherto unexplored; namely the EU and the Australsian/Asia-Pacific region ...

Nonlinear Transverse Transport in a Ferromagnetic Polar Metal

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
This work reports the observation of a nonlinear transverse response in ferromagnetic polar SrRuO3(111) thin films. The nonlinear signal exhibits a sharp enhancement across the magnetic phase transition. Through detailed scaling and theoretical analysis, the authors attribute this behavior to a sign reversal of the Berry curvature triple, establishing ...

Experimental Study to Determine the Leakage Area of Single-Leaf Smoke Control Doors in the Design of Pressure Differential Systems

open access: yesFire
On the occasion of building fires, the risk of smoke, which adversely influences escape conditions, must be minimised. One way to reduce the risk is, for example, to pressurise the escape route in order to limit the infiltration of smoke.

Why Is Law Enforcement Decentralized? [PDF]

open access: yes
Law enforcement is decentralized. It is so despite documented interjurisdictional externalities which would justify its centralization. To explain this fact, we construct a political economy model of law enforcement.

Synchronization of Analog Neuron Circuits With Digital Memristive Synapses: An Hybrid Approach

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
An hybrid circuit mimicking neural units coupled using memristive synapses is introduced. The analog neurons provide flexibility and robustness, and the digital memristive coupling guarantees the full reconfigurability of the interconnection. The onset of a synchronized spiking behavior in two circuits mimicking the Izhikevich neuron is discussed from ...

LAW ENFORCEMENT UNDER INCOMPLETE LAW: Theory and Evidence from Financial Market Regulation [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper studies the design of law-making and law enforcement institutions based on the premise that law is inherently incomplete. Under incomplete law, law enforcement by courts may suffer from deterrence failure, defined as the socialwelfare loss ...
