In Austin's theory of law it is a necessary condition of a rule's being a rule of law that it should be enforceable: for, according to J. L. Austin, all law is command, and what distinguishes command from other expressions of desire, such as wish, is "the power and purpose of the party commanding to inflict an evil or pain in case the desire be ...

Proceedings of the fourth international joint conference on Autonomous agents and multiagent systems, 2005
In this paper we study the enforcement of social laws in artificial social systems using a control system. We define the enforceable social law problem as an extension of Tennenholtz' stable social law problem. We distinguish the choice of social laws from the choice of control systems, where the latter leads to new computational problems.

International law and law enforcement firearms
Medicine, Conflict and Survival, 2004Several international agreements set constraints on the legitimate use of firearms as representing lethal force. Clause 38 provides that the Agreement will be governed by English1 law. Choosing English or New York law for loan agreements makes syndication of very large loans easier than many other governing laws because the market customarily deals in agreements under English or New York law. Another factor is the predictability of these laws.

Legal experts set an essentially social and psychological, and indeed behavioural agenda for the law. James (1979) offers a representative view in his assertion that the law is a set of rules which form the pattern of behaviour in a given society.

Enforcement of International Law
2017This chapter examines the issue of international law enforcement. The absence of an international state means that international law relies principally on complex enforcement mechanisms, as opposed to a single powerful law enforcer. The focus is thus on the design and operation of enforcement mechanisms under conditions of decentralized power and ...
