1991Abstract During 1958–9 Patrick Atiyah was my neighbour in Khartoum. This was my first year of full-time teaching and he closely affected my academic development as mentor, colleague, and friend. That friendship has survived our various wanderings, a second period as colleagues at Warwick, and another recent phase as neighbours in Iffley.
