Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics in Biochemical Systems and Its Application

open access: yesEntropy, 2021
Living systems are open systems, where the laws of nonequilibrium thermodynamics play the important role. Therefore, studying living systems from a nonequilibrium thermodynamic aspect is interesting and useful.

High‐Temperature Oxidation of the CrFeNi Medium‐Entropy Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The oxidation behavior of equiatomic CrFeNi MEA is a key issue that determines this material's suitability for high‐temperature application. The understanding of long‐term behavior is even more crucial than short‐term corrosion effects. The alloy is exposed to synthetic air at 1000, 1050, and 1100 °C for 24, 100, and 1000 h and systematically compared ...

Quantum thermodynamically consistent local master equations

open access: yesPhysical Review Research, 2021
Local master equations are a widespread tool to model open quantum systems, especially in the context of many-body systems. These equations, however, are believed to lead to thermodynamic anomalies and violation of the laws of thermodynamics. In contrast,

Direct Electron Detection Electron Energy‐Loss Spectroscopy: Speeding Up 2D Analytical In Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy for Aluminum Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging techniques are an essential tool to document dynamic developments, such as precipitation in aluminum alloys, during in situ heating experiments using transmission electron microscopy. However, in many cases, chemical information is required to interpret complex nanoscale processes.

(Nb,Ti)(C,N)‐Precipitates in High‐Strength Low‐Alloyed Steels—Modeling, Characterization and Validation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Steel samples are investigated using complementary simulations and measurements. Transmission electron microscopy in bright‐field mode, combined with energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy maps for titanium and niobium, reveals distinct particle populations. Simulations reproduce these in size and composition.

Horizon Entropy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Although the laws of thermodynamics are well established for black hole horizons, much less has been said in the literature to support the extension of these laws to more general settings such as an asymptotic de Sitter horizon or a Rindler horizon (the ...

Design of Multiphase Compositionally Complex Alloys for Enhanced Hardness at Elevated Temperatures and Machinability: Comparative Study with Inconel 718

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study compares the mechanical properties of Inconel 718 with two newly developed compositionally complex alloys (CCAs). Inco‐like‐H alloy demonstrates significantly improved wear resistance, surface finish, and hardness, notably at high temperatures. This CCA requires no heat treatment and is well suited for additive manufacturing. Its performance

A Symmetric Form of the Clausius Statement of the Second Law of Thermodynamics

open access: yesEntropy
Bridgman once reflected on thermodynamics that the laws of thermodynamics were formulated in their present form by the great founders of thermodynamics, Kelvin and Clausius, before all the essential physical facts were in, and there has been no adequate ...

Thermodynamics in Black-hole/CFT Correspondence

open access: yes, 2013
The area law of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole suggests that the black hole should have a lower-dimensional holographic description. It has been found recently that a large class of rotating and charged black holes could be holographically ...
