Educational programmes for reducing depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms among migrant workers: a scoping review and evidence synthesis

open access: yesBMC Public Health
Background Migrant workers face additional stress from language and cultural barriers in host countries. Educational programs focus on supporting acculturation of migrant workers are often believed to help stress-relief by providing knowledge for their ...

Nutrient/TOR signaling controls adipose mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) to regulate organismal growth in Drosophila

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Animals must match their growth rate to available nutrients. We show that in Drosophila larvae, the nutrient‐sensing TOR kinase controls growth by regulating levels of TFAM, a key regulator of mitochondrial function, in the adipose tissue. When nutrients are abundant, high TOR activity suppresses TFAM, lowering mitochondrial bioenergetic activity and ...

Peripheral lysosomes recruit PLEKHG3 to focal adhesions and restrain protrusion dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proximity‐dependent labeling at the LAMTOR complex revealed the Rho GEF PLEKHG3 as a lysosome‐proximal protein directing the study toward the influence of lysosome positioning on actin dynamics and cell motility. We show that PLEKHG3 colocalizes with lysosomes at focal adhesion sites and observe that forced peripheral dispersion of lysosomes hinders ...

Lay community health workers and mental health services in low resource settings

open access: yes, 2018
The thesis is premised on a public mental health perspective, and is informed by my interest in working with and developing task shifting/sharing initiatives in low resourced settings. Based on my experience with nodding syndrome (NS), a mysterious neuropsychiatric illness affecting children in northern Uganda, I sought to answer questions relating to ...

Engineering peptides into antibodies—opportunities and strategies for therapeutic innovation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Peptides and antibodies occupy complementary therapeutic niches. Peptides recognize difficult targets in a compact format, while antibodies add specificity, long half‐life, and effector functions. This review examines strategies that merge both modalities—peptide grafting into loops, terminal and Fc fusions, and bioconjugation—highlighting how ...

The lay health worker as a member of the primary health team

open access: yes, 2014
M.Cur. (Community Health Nursing) During employment as a registered nurse and while rendering mobile family planning services on farms in the Eastern Transvaal, it was found that appreciable time was spent on non-nursing tasks. The impression gained, was that the people who visited the clinics were only a part of the total farm community and that ...

Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses

Golgi enzymes are retrieved from the plasma membrane to the trans‐Golgi network

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Golgi enzymes are traditionally considered resident proteins retained within the Golgi apparatus. Here, we demonstrate that a subset transiently reaches the cell surface and is subsequently retrieved to the trans‐Golgi network via retrograde transport. Using a nanobody‐based toolkit, we uncover a dynamic trafficking cycle of several Golgi enzymes.
