Layer-by-layer films as biomaterials: bioactivity and mechanics

Journal of Biomaterials Science, Polymer Edition, 2014
Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly offers a facile approach toward biomaterials of nanoscale thickness. Bioactivity may be realized through incorporation of biomolecular species within the film architecture, and film mechanics may be controlled through post-formation chemical cross-linking steps.

Layer-by-layer deposition of polyelectrolyte ultrathin films

2010 IEEE 5th International Conference on Nano/Micro Engineered and Molecular Systems, 2010
Substituted polythiophenes and polycarbazoles are materials of great interest as charge-carrier transport materials and have been utilized in PLED and FET applications. The layer-by-layer (LbL) self assembly has been used to fabricate polymer thin films on any substrates.

Multiresponsive Clay-Containing Layer-by-Layer Films

ACS Nano, 2011
We report on polymer/clay layer-by-layer films responsive to multiple stimuli. Temperature- and salt-responsive films were constructed using assembly of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and montmorillonite clay nanosheets. An additional pH response was achieved by depositing and cross-linking hybrid, dual-network PNIPAM/clay/PNIPAM/poly(methacrylic

Layer‐by‐Layer‐Assembled Healable Antifouling Films

Advanced Materials, 2015
Healable antifouling films are fabricated by the exponential layer-by-layer assembly of PEGylated branched poly(ethylenimine) and hyaluronic acid followed by post-crosslinking. The antifouling function originates from the grafted PEG and the extremely soft nature of the films.

Layer-by-Layer Doping of Few-Layer Graphene Film

ACS Nano, 2010
We propose a new method of layer-by-layer (LbL) doping of thin graphene films. Large area monolayer graphene was synthesized on Cu foil by using the chemical vapor deposition method. Each layer was transferred on a polyethylene terephthalate substrate followed by a salt-solution casting, where the whole process was repeated several times to get LbL ...

Counterions in layer-by-layer films—Influence of the drying process

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2007
The amount of counterions, measured by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in layer-by-layer (LbL) films of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS), prepared from solutions with various NaCl concentrations, is shown to be greatly influenced by the film drying process: a smaller amount of counterions is ...

Immobilization of Ibuprofen-Containing Nanospheres in Layer-by-Layer Films

Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, 2011
Liposomes have been applied to many fields as nanocarriers, especially in drug delivery as active molecules may be entrapped either in their aqueous interior or onto the hydrophobic surface. In this paper we describe the fabrication of layer-by-layer (LbL) films made with liposomes incorporating the anti-inflammatory ibuprofen.

Fabrication and Elimination of PTAA/P4VP Layer-By-Layer Films

Applied Spectroscopy, 2008
Layer-by-layer (LBL) ultra-thin films have been assembled by alternate adsorption of poly(3-thiophene acetic acid) (PTAA) and poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) on planar quartz slides via hydrogen-bonding interaction. Subsequently, the multilayers can be controllably removed by changing the pH values of the aqueous solutions used for film immersion.

Construction of Ultrathin Layer-by-Layer Films of Oligothiophene Derivatives on an Electrode

Langmuir, 2021
Oligothiophene derivatives, which are known as p-type materials, have been synthesized, and their ultrathin layer-by-layer films have been constructed on an electrode using a simple and convenient dipping method. The stepwise deposition behavior of quaterthiophene and sexithiophene derivatives on the electrode via hydrogen bonding was monitored by ...

Stimuli‐Responsive Free‐Standing Layer‐By‐Layer Films

Advanced Materials, 2015
Free-standing, stimuli-responsive polyelectrolyte multilayer films enabled by light-induced degradation of sacrificial compartments are introduced. Two examples are described: i) a triple responsive film that uses light, redox, and pH for different functions, and ii) different wavelengths of light for different functions.
