Proteomic analysis of chicken eggshell cuticle membrane layer
Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, 2014The eggshell is a barrier that plays an important role in the defense of the egg against microbial and other infections; it protects the developing bird against unfavorable impacts of the environment and is essential for the reproduction of birds. The avian eggshell is a complex structure that is formed during movement along the oviduct by producing a ...

Immunological differences between layer- and broiler-type chickens
Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology, 2002In commercial poultry husbandry, alternatives for the use of antibiotics and vaccines are under investigation, which preferably have to be applicable for both layer- and broiler-type chickens. There are indications that the defense mechanisms vary between layer- and broiler-type chickens.

A Vaccine to Prevent Egg Layer Peritonitis in Chickens
Avian Diseases, 2020A series of studies was undertaken in specific-pathogen-free white leghorn chickens for the development of a chicken model of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) peritonitis. Once established, this model was then used to measure the effectiveness of a siderophore receptor and porin proteins (SRP®) APEC vaccine.

Outbreak of Comb Necrosis in Layer Breeder Chickens
Avian Diseases, 1997Comb necrosis with leg weakness was seen in 41-day-old female layer breeder chickens. This disease occurred in three flocks at a breeder farm, but not in other flocks of growing chickens and broiler breeder hens at the same farm. The disease started in 35-day-old chicks in three flocks.

Outbreak of Type C Botulism in Commercial Layer Chickens
Avian Diseases, 2016This report describes an outbreak of type C botulism in two organic, free-range commercial layer farms in the Midwest. Hens affected were 64-wk-old Hy-Line brown hens and 34-wk-old Hy-Line brown hens owned by the same company, but housed on different premises, with approximately 20,000 birds per house.

High Seroprevalence of Histomonas meleagridis in Dutch Layer Chickens
Avian Diseases Digest, 2011Histomona meleagridis is a protozoan parasite that may cause outbreaks of histomonosis with high mortality, especially in turkey flocks. Chickens are less susceptible to the disease than are turkeys, but are considered to act as an important reservoir. To determine the seroprevalence of H.

Kainic acid affects both plexiform layers of chicken retina
Neuroscience Letters, 1981Intraocular injections of kainic acid produce marked lesions of the chicken retina. Low doses (6-20 nmol/retina) appear to cause lesions of the inner part of the retina, primarily involving amacrine cells. At around 60 nmol/retina there is a qualitative change in the nature of the lesion, as the horizontal and bipolar cells begin to degenerate.

Immunomodulation by probiotic lactobacilli in layer- and meat-type chickens
British Poultry Science, 20041. The aim of the experiments was to evaluate whether selected probiotic lactobacillus strains have different immunomodulating effects in layer- and meat-type strain chickens. 2. Humoral and cellular specific and non-specific immune responses were studied by experiments on cellular proliferation, entry and survival of Salmonella bacteria in gut and ...

An IoT Monitoring Assistant for Chicken Layer Farms
2019 International Conference on Information and Communication Technology Convergence (ICTC), 2019Chicken eggs are one of the most common staple foods being consumed almost all over the world. Optimization of egg production is important to address the possibility of shortage in the near future. The application of IoT and its possible benefits to the poultry industry could serve as a base for cost-effective solutions and as a proof-of-concept for ...

Journal of Meat Science, 2020
A study was planned on the nutritive value of meat in commercial native chicken (CNC), backyard native chicken (BNC), commercial broiler (CB) and spent layer chicken (SLC). An experiment was conducted on 12 birds of either sex in each class. Birds were slaughtered by Jatka method and nutritional composition and protein quality of each group were ...
