The three-dimensional leading-edge vortex of a "hovering' model hawkmoth [PDF]
Recent flow visualization experiments with the hawkmoth, Manduca sexta, revealed a small but clear leading-edge vortex and a pronounced three-dimensional flow.

Durable quasi‐liquid polymer brush surfaces provide an anti‐scaling strategy for hypersaline brine evaporation and zero‐liquid‐discharge desalination. The smooth, liquid‐like QLS interface suppresses substrate‐side salt nucleation, promotes compact crystallization and dewetting, reduces crystal–surface contact area, and enables low‐adhesion salt ...

On the competition between leading-edge and tip-vortex growth for a pitching plate [PDF]
The interaction between leading-edge-vortex and tip-vortex development on a low-aspect-ratio plate has been investigated and compared to a nominally two-dimensional rectangular flat plate.

Sea cucumber mutable collagenous tissue (MCT) is a remarkable collagen‐based material which can rapidly undergo large changes in stiffness through transiently bound effector proteins. Here, we investigate the hierarchical structure and mechanical response of MCT from Cucumaria frondosa across length scales with a wide range of methods, also exploring ...

Interactions Of A Quasi-two-dimensional Vortex With A Stationary And Oscillating Leading Edge. [PDF]
Interactions of a quasi-two-dimensional vortex with a stationary and oscillating leading-edge were examined using a scanning laser version of high-image-density particle image velocimetry (PIV).

Transient development of the leading-edge vortex and its role in unsteady aerodynamic load variations [PDF]
Large eddy simulations are conducted for a pitching National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics 63(3)418 airfoil section at a reduced frequency of K=0.4 and a chord-based Reynolds number, Rec=100 000.

In this work, diamonds with negative charged silicon‐vacancy (SiV−) centers have been designed for use as thermometers in biomedical applications. Multiparametric analysis of the emission characteristics of the SiV− centers provides extraordinary sensitivity for temperature detection in the physiological temperature range.
