ezTrack: An R Package for Accessible Exploration of Animal Tracking Data

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
This paper introduces an R package designed to make animal tracking data easier to clean, summarize, map, and visualize, especially for users who need practical workflows rather than highly specialized movement‐modeling tools. It provides functions for turning raw tracking data into a tidy format, generating summary statistics, plotting tracks and home

A primer on forest structure measurement with lidar for ecologists

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Light detection and ranging (lidar) technology has fundamentally advanced the way we measure forest structure, facilitating new insights into ecological processes. Lidar for forest ecology applications is deployed on multiple types of platforms that operate from the ground, air, or space, and each has associated strengths and limitations ...

Flow resistance parameterization for large wood in two‐dimensional depth‐averaged models: Effects of flow condition, blockage, and sediment

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 8, August 2026.
Using 16 flume experiments and 2D modeling, we show that large‐wood flow resistance is not a fixed property of wood porosity but varies systematically with flow condition, blockage and most strongly sediment‐shaped bed topography. The drag coefficient and Manning's n are interchangeable, but calibration is essential where scour occurs.

Winter Type, Mediated by Land‐Surface Processes, Controls Seasonal Discharge Variability in Culturally Critical Ecosystems in the US's Upper Midwest

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 8, August 2026.
Results showed snowpack to be the primary driver of springtime flow in the low‐relief, humid Upper Midwest U.S., with overall winter precipitation and thawing acting as key secondary drivers impacting hydrological flux partitioning across the land surface.

A 3D Model of Ryegrass Shoot Architecture, Sward Light Interception and Photosynthesis

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, Volume 69, Issue 4, August 2026.
Increasing the photosynthetic capacity of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is required to improve the productivity of pastoral farming in temperate regions. A three‐dimensional (3D) model was constructed of the shoot growth of ryegrass based on plant morphological traits such as tiller angle, leaf angle, leaf width, number of tillers per plant ...

A physics primer on photon‐counting detectors in CT: Physics, signal formation, and performance

open access: yesMedical Physics, Volume 53, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Photon‐counting detector CT (PCD‐CT) is moving from laboratory development to clinical deployment. However, its threshold‐bin data arise from a tightly coupled detector–readout chain that can be difficult to understand as a whole. These data are not a direct readout of photon energy, but the outcome of a sequence of physical and electronic ...
