Corn stunt is vectored by several leafhoppers
Corn stunt is vectored by several leafhoppers. The spiroplasma overwinters in the gut of leafhoppers. Spiroplasmas are cultured on defined media. They are facultative anaerobes, lacks a true cell wall and are motile. Doubly infected with maize rayado

Coevolution of leafhoppers and their microbial symbionts [PDF]
Nutritional symbionts are a vital component of many organisms’ survival strategies, supplying essential nutrients, metabolizing substances that are otherwise indigestible, and in some cases, conferring resistance to environmental stressors.
