A Review of Leakage Flow in Centrifugal Blood Pumps

Artificial Organs, 2006
Abstract:  This article presents a new approach in determining the functional relationship between the leakage flow in a centrifugal blood pump and various parameters that affect it. While high leakage flow in a blood pump is essential for good washout and can help prevent thrombus formation, excessive leakage flow will result in higher fluid shear ...

Leakage effects in laminar duct flow: a numerical study

Applied Scientific Research, 1992
Summary: The influence of transverse leakage into a pressure-driven laminar flow in an infinitely long square duct is investigated. By a simple decomposition of the resulting three-dimensional pressure field, the leakage-induced secondary flow problem decouples from the primary flow problem.

Prediction of leakage mass flow rate through gas springs

Journal of Propulsion and Power, 1987
A general analysis has been carried out, dealing with gas spring operation, with particular reference to free-piston Stirling engine applications. Previous work, based on the assumption that losses due to gas leakage are negligible, provided an energetic model together with an experimental method suitable for the evaluation of the convection heat ...

Reynolds Number Scaling of Leakage Vortex Flow

2004
To study the Reynolds number scaling of cavitation inception, a ducted propulsor simulation is developed and extensively validated with experimental results. The simulation is used as a tool for investigating the minimum pressure, circulation, and axial/tangential velocities in the vortex core, thus providing a means of correlating these quantities to ...

Effect of Upstream Unsteady Flow Conditions on Rotor Tip Leakage Flow

Volume 5: Turbo Expo 2002, Parts A and B, 2002
A study has been conducted, using unsteady three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations to determine the impact on rotor performance of the interaction between the stator wakes and rotor tip clearance flow. The key effects of the interaction are: (1) a decrease in loss and blockage associated with tip clearance flow; (2) an increase in

Cross-leakage flow between adjacent flow channels in PEM fuel cells

Journal of Power Sources, 2006
Abstract In polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells, serpentine flow channels are used conventionally for effective water removal. The reactant flows along the flow channel with pressure decrease due to the frictional and minor losses as well as the reactant depletion because of electrochemical reactions in the cells.

Unsteady Flows in Lines with Distributed Leakage

Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1968
Unsteady, nonuniform flows in pipelines which experience leakage are analyzed. Particular attention is given to the orifice manifold. Plows in a continuous manifold can be treated in several ways: (1) When the leakage is of such magnitude that capacitance can be neglected, the flow is governed by a parabolic equation; (2) more generally, if elastic ...
