Passive flow control of bileaflet mechanical heart valve leakage flow

Journal of Biomechanics, 2008
Blood damage and platelet activation are inherent problems with present day mechanical heart valve designs. We investigate the approach of passive flow control applied to bileaflet mechanical heart valve (BMHV) flows as a means of optimizing leakage flow hemodynamics at length scales relevant to blood damage and platelet activation.

Tip Leakage Flow In a Mixed-flow Pump

The numerical results used to describe the special flow features/characteristics of the mixed-flow pump in this chapter were obtained by employing the computational methodology described in Chapter 3 which includes the pump model, mesh generation, turbulence models and their near wall treatment, and the boundary conditions.

Through Flow Analysis and Leakage Flow of a Regenerative Pump

Transactions of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers B, 2003
Flows in a regenerative pump were calculated for several flow-rates, using the CFX-Tascflow. The calculated results show the vortex structure in the impeller and side channel. The predicted performance shows considerable discrepancy from the measured values for low flow rates. Main source of the difference is the leakage flow of pump strongly affecting

The Interaction of Turbine Inter-Platform Leakage Flow With the Mainstream Flow

Volume 6: Turbo Expo 2005, Parts A and B, 2005
Individual nozzle guide vanes (NGVs) in modern aero engines are often cast as a single piece with integral hub and casing endwalls. When in operation there is a leakage flow through the chord-wise inter-platform gaps. An investigation into the effect of this leakage flow on turbine performance is presented.

Behavior of Tip Leakage Flow in an Axial Flow Compressor Rotor

Volume 6: Turbomachinery, Parts A and B, 2006
The current paper reports on investigations with an aim to advance the understanding of the flow field near the casing of a small-scale high-speed axial flow compressor rotor. Steady three dimensional viscous flow calculations are applied to obtain flow fields at various operating conditions.

On the leakage flow around gas bubbles in slug flow in a microchannel

AIChE Journal, 2015
The leakage flow is that liquid does not push gas bubbles and leaks through the channel corners. This leakage flow was confirmed by tracking particles moving in the liquid film with a double light path method and was quantified by tracking the gas–liquid interface movement. The results show that leakage flow varies during bubble formation process.

Behaviour of tip-leakage flow in an axial flow compressor rotor

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part A: Journal of Power and Energy, 2007
The current paper reports on investigations with an aim to advance the understanding of the flowfield near the casing of a small-scale high-speed axial flow compressor rotor. Steady three-dimensional viscous flow calculations are applied to obtain flowfields at various operating conditions.

Influence of the Leakage Flow Tangential Velocity on the Loss Generation and Leakage Flow Kinematics in Shrouded Axial Compressor Cascades

Volume 6: Turbomachinery, Parts A and B, 2006
Although compressor blades have long been shrouded for aerodynamic and structural reasons, the impact of the leakage flow in the shroud cavities on passage flows has only recently been investigated. Furthermore, the tangential velocity of the leakage flow, set by the blading and the relative motion between rotating and stationary surfaces, has a strong

Prediction of Leakage Flow in a Shrouded Centrifugal Blood Pump

Artificial Organs, 2010
AbstractThis article proposes a phenomenological model to predict the leakage flow in the clearance gap of shrouded centrifugal blood pumps. A good washout in the gap clearance between the rotating impeller surfaces and volute casing is essential to avoid thrombosis. However, excessive leakage flow will result in higher fluid shear stress that may lead

Leakage effects in laminar duct flow: a numerical study

Applied Scientific Research, 1992
Summary: The influence of transverse leakage into a pressure-driven laminar flow in an infinitely long square duct is investigated. By a simple decomposition of the resulting three-dimensional pressure field, the leakage-induced secondary flow problem decouples from the primary flow problem.
