This paper gives a basic review and a summary of recent developments for leaky-wave antennas (LWAs). An LWA uses a guiding structure that supports wave propagation along the length of the structure, with the wave radiating or “leaking” continuously along the structure. Such antennas may be uniform, quasi-uniform, or periodic.

Modal Analysis and Propagation Characteristics of Leaky Waves on a 2-D Periodic Leaky-Wave Antenna
IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, 2018A 2-D periodic leaky-wave antenna is studied to examine the mechanism of beam formation from leaky-wave modes and the properties of the leaky-wave modes. The structure consists of a grounded dielectric slab with a periodic arrangement of narrow rectangular patches of metal on the upper surface of the dielectric, excited by a slot in the ground plane ...

Holographic-Based Leaky-Wave Structures: Transformation of Guided Waves to Leaky Waves
IEEE Microwave Magazine, 2021The term space wave refers to a wave that is propagating through an open medium with a diverging wavefront as it moves away from the source. The term guided wave denotes a variety of wave configurations that are being carried by a closed/open/partially open structure [1].

A History of Leaky Waves and Leaky-Wave Antennas
2019 URSI International Symposium on Electromagnetic Theory (EMTS), 2019The history of leaky waves and leaky-wave antennas is an interesting one, with much of the theory being put on a firm foundation in the 1950s and 1960s by early pioneers such as Nathan Marcuvitz and Arthur A. Oliner. Rapid development of leaky-wave antennas took place after the foundation was established, and the development spread to areas such as ...

Review of Recent Advances in the Leaky-Wave Analysis of 2-D Leaky-Wave Antennas
2020 14th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP), 2020Recent developments are reviewed in the area of leaky-wave analysis of two-dimensional (2-D) leaky-wave antennas. Recent results are reviewed in three areas: (1) new beamwidth formulas for 2-D leaky-wave antennas, (2) leakywave analysis of wideband Fabry-Perot cavity antennas, and (3) leaky-wave analysis of 2-D periodic leaky-wave antennas (those that ...

Propagation characteristics of leaky waves on a 2D periodic leaky-wave antenna
2017 IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium (IMS), 2017A two-dimensional (2D) periodic leaky-wave antenna consisting of a periodic distribution of rectangular patches on a grounded dielectric substrate, excited by a narrow slot in the ground plane, is studied here. The TM0 surface wave that is normally supported by a grounded dielectric substrate is perturbed by the presence of the periodic patches to ...
