Human Brain Vasculature‐on‐a‐Chip Model Constructed With Microvessels Isolated From Cryopreserved Postmortem Human Brain Tissue

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This manuscript describes the cultivation of viable microvessels from cryopreserved human brain tissue. When embedded in hydrogels and cultured in microfluidic devices, these microvessels exhibit complex architectures reminiscent of arterioles and capillaries, can be perfused, and display intact barrier function. Collectively, these results demonstrate

Dc to ac field conversion due to leaky-wave excitation in a plasma slab behind an ionization front

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2015
We present a way for generating coherent tunable electromagnetic radiation through dc to ac field conversion by an ionization front. The conversion is caused by the excitation of leaky waves behind the transversely limited ionization front propagating in

Using the Partial Wave Method for Wave Structure Calculation and the Conceptual Interpretation of Elastodynamic Guided Waves

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2018
The partial-wave method takes advantage of the Christoffel equation’s generality to represent waves within a waveguide. More specifically, the partial-wave method is well known for its usefulness when calculating dispersion curves for multilayered ...

Mixer-Duplexer-Antenna Leaky-Wave System Based on Periodic Space-Time Modulation

open access: yes, 2016
We present a mixer-duplexer-antenna leaky-wave system based on periodic space-time modulation. This system operates as a full transceiver, where the upconversion and downconversion mixing operations are accomplished via space-time transitions, the ...

Ti6Al4V‐Bioglass‐Copper Composites for Load‐Bearing Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
We have designed and manufactured a novel Ti64‐based composite by adding 45S5 bioglass (BG) and copper (Cu). Adding BG on titanium improves wear resistance and biocompatibility, whereas Cu addition improves mechanical strength while providing inherent lifelong bacterial resistance.

Sensitivity of Coronal Loop Sausage Mode Frequencies and Decay Rates to Radial and Longitudinal Density Inhomogeneities: A Spectral Approach

open access: yes, 2017
Fast sausage modes in solar magnetic coronal loops are only fully contained in unrealistically short dense loops. Otherwise they are leaky, losing energy to their surrounds as outgoing waves.

Real‐Time 3D Ultrasound Imaging with an Ultra‐Sparse, Low Power Architecture

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents a novel, ultra‐sparse ultrasound architecture that paves the way for wearable real‐time 3D imaging. By integrating a unique convolutional array with chirped data acquisition, the system achieves high‐resolution volumetric scans at a fraction of the power and hardware complexity.

Excitation of surface waves on one-dimensional solid–fluid phononic crystals and the beam displacement effect

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2014
The possibility of surface wave generation by diffraction of pressure waves on deeply corrugated one-dimensional phononic crystal gratings is studied both theoretically and experimentally.

Perfect Anomalous Reflection with a Binary Huygens' Metasurface

open access: yes, 2018
In this paper we propose a new metasurface that is able to reflect a known incoming electromagnetic wave into an arbitrary direction, with perfect power efficiency.

Tunable Bioresorbable Scaffolds With Marine Sulfated Polysaccharides for Small‐Caliber Vascular Grafts: A Multi‐Layered Strategy Combining Electrospinning and 4‐Axis Printing

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A multilayered small‐caliber vascular scaffold combining electrospinning and 4‐axis printing is developed and biofunctionalized with marine sulfated polysaccharides from Holothuria tubulosa. The resulting construct exhibits enhanced hemocompatibility, tunable mechanical properties, and supports endothelial and smooth muscle cell adhesion and ...
