The magnitude and progress of lean body mass, fat‐free mass, and skeletal muscle mass loss following bariatric surgery: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesObesity Reviews, 2021
Postbariatric loss of muscle tissue could negatively affect long‐term health due to its role in various bodily processes, such as metabolism and functional capacity. This meta‐analysis aimed to unravel time‐dependent changes in the magnitude and progress

Estimation of lean body mass in children [PDF]

open access: yesBritish Journal of Anaesthesia, 2011
In adults, dosages of some anaesthetic agents are based on lean body mass (LBM) rather than body weight. Our aim was to derive an equation for estimating LBM in children.Patients comprised three groups: prospective kidney transplant donors from two separate centres (centres 1 and 3) and children referred to a further centre (centre 2) for the routine ...

Pathways to interleukin-6 in healthy males and serious leisure male athletes: physical activity, body composition and age. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Physical activity (PA) is beneficial to overall health, in part due to physiological changes that lower risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including reduced inflammation. However, the mechanism by which PA reduces inflammation is unclear.

Nutritional Status of Maintenance Dialysis Patients: Low Lean Body Mass Index and Obesity Are Common, Protein-Energy Wasting Is Uncommon. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
BACKGROUND AND AIMS:Maintenance dialysis patients are at increased risk of abnormal nutritional status due to numerous causative factors, both nutritional and non-nutritional.

Association between appendicular lean mass and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: epidemiological cross-sectional study and bidirectional Mendelian randomization analysis

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition, 2023
BackgroundThe association of BMI with COPD, and sarcopenia in COPD have been both confirmed by several studies, but research on the relationship and causality of body lean mass and the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains to be ...

Dapagliflozin increases the lean-to total mass ratio in type 2 diabetes mellitus

open access: yesNutrition & Diabetes, 2021
We compared the effect of dapagliflozin versus glibenclamide on the ratio of lean-to total mass in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, carotid subclinical atherosclerosis, HbA1c 7.0–9.0% and 40–70 years-old.

Large meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies identifies five loci for lean body mass [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Lean body mass, consisting mostly of skeletal muscle, is important for healthy aging. We performed a genome-wide association study for whole body (20 cohorts of European ancestry with n = 38,292) and appendicular (arms and legs) lean body mass (n = 28 ...

Lean body mass in twins

open access: yesMetabolism, 1995
A study of 49 pairs of monozygous (MZ) twins and 38 pairs of same-sexed dizygous (DZ) twins showed that lean body mass (LBM), as determined by potassium 40 counting, is under genetic influence. Intrapair variances for LBM are much smaller than those for body fat, which suggests that LBM has a higher degree of heritability.

The Importance of Muscle Versus Fat Mass in Sarcopenic Obesity: A Re-evaluation Using D3-Creatine Muscle Mass Versus DXA Lean Mass Measurements.

open access: yesThe journals of gerontology. Series A, Biological sciences and medical sciences, 2020
BACKGROUND The combination of sarcopenia and obesity has been associated with physical impairment in older people. However, previous research has relied on assessments of lean mass as a surrogate for muscle mass.

Association between obesity and bacterial vaginosis as assessed by Nugent score [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Background Bacterial vaginosis is one of the most common vaginal conditions in the U.S. Recent studies have suggested obese women have an abnormal microbiota reminiscent of BV; however, few studies have investigated the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis
