This chapter examines Las Vegas through literary depictions of it, in particular Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Thompson’s novel sets a pattern for Las Vegas narratives in which extreme behaviour unfolds against the background of exceptionalist legal and moral rhetoric.

Evaluating land–sea linkages using land cover change and coral reef monitoring data: A case study from northeastern Puerto Rico

Land cover change that leads to increased nutrient and sediment runoff is an important driver of change in coral reef ecosystems. In this study, we combined satellite remote sensing and field monitoring to assess concomitant changes in watershed land cover and coral cover in northeastern Puerto Rico in 2000–2015.

From snapshots to continuous estimates: Augmenting citizen science with computer vision for fish monitoring

This study presents an end‐to‐end computer‐vision pipeline for monitoring fish migration using underwater video. We integrate field camera deployment, annotation, model training and automated in‐season counting to generate continuous, high‐resolution data on river herring spawning migration.
