The genus is characterized using current concepts, and its delimitation and family position are discussed. Thirteen taxa are accepted and a key supplied together with new data on their host specificity and distribution.

It has been suggested that the usnic acid-containing species of Lepraria do not belong to Lepraria s. str. In addition, the two usnic acid-containing Lepraria species, Lepraria usnica Sipman and Lepraria coriensis (Hue) Sipman, were suspected to be conspecific by some authors.

Comparative studies in thePhysciaceae revealed that characters of the apical apparatus of asci differ between the various genera. Two major ascus types are observable in this family. They are found to correspond with certain ascospore types.

Fatty acids and phospholipids from lichens of the order lecanorales

Abstract Three lichen species from the order Lecanorales were examined for their fatty acids by capillary GC-Ms. Among the 70 fatty acids identified, 22 were saturated, including six iso -acids, two anteiso -acids, one pristanic acid and one phytanic acid; their total amount varied from 10.6 to 26.8%.

The Family Cladoniaceae (Lecanorales) in the Galapagos Islands

As part of an ongoing comprehensive inventory of the Galapagos lichen flora, all species in the Cladoniaceae from the archipelago have been revised using both historic and recent collections. A total of twenty-six species is reported here, one species of Cladia and twenty-five Cladonia species.
