Numerical Investigation on LEFM Limits under LSY Conditions

Creep Crack Growth Under LEFM Conditions

The paper presents an outline model for creep crack growth under LEFM conditions. The incremental nature of the crack propagation process is taken into account, and a theoretical analysis shows that the relation between crack tip stress intensification and crack growth rate is not unique.

Limits to the applicability of LEFM in notch fatigue

Abstract A comparison is made between elastic-plastic, and linear-elastic, fracture mechanics parameters, for notch fatigue problems. It is shown that in high-strength aluminium alloy 2024-T351, at normal working stress levels, the errors involved in using LEFM for any crack detectable during non-destructive testing, is likely to be small.

LEFM size requirements for the fracture testing of sea ice

The stress-separation curve obtained for the in-situ response of first-year sea ice is used to obtain specimen size requirements for sea ice fracture tests. Issues of notch sensitivity and minimum size requirements for the applicability of linear elastic fracture mechanics are addressed.

Short Cracks and LEFM Error

Figure 1 shows crack growth data from the propagation of a surface crack in a 2024-T351 aluminium alloy specimen subjected to mode I fatigue loading. The loading conditions are: peak stress 325 MPa, stress ratio of 0.1 and fatigue life of 139,500 cycles.

Lifetime estimates using LEFM

A straight steel tie-bar of circular section, 150 mm in diameter, D, contains a central, transverse penny-shaped crack 8 mm in diameter. The axial load on the bar varies cyclically between 1.5 MN and 4 MN. Estimate the number of load cycles to grow the crack to a diameter (2a) of 30 mm.

Extension of LEFM for Small-Scale Yielding

Linear elastic fracture mechanics as introduced in Chap. 2 is extended to account for plastic deformations at the crack tip. The concept of an equivalent elastic crack and an effective stress intensity factor for small-scale yielding is explicated.
