Critical Care Medicine, 2007Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality resulting from congestive heart failure are major concerns for the critical care physician. Although heart failure is commonly associated with impaired systolic function, in up to one half of cases, heart failure occurs exclusively on the basis of an impairment of diastolic function.

Critical Care Medicine, 1990Although systolic dysfunction of the left ventricle has been characterized in septic shock (SS) and sepsis without shock (SWS), diastolic abnormalities are less well characterized. Diastolic filling was determined using pulsed Doppler transmitral spectral tracings in 13 patients with SS, ten patients with SWS, and 33 normal controls.
