Left ventricular diastolic function

Critical Care Medicine, 2007
Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality resulting from congestive heart failure are major concerns for the critical care physician. Although heart failure is commonly associated with impaired systolic function, in up to one half of cases, heart failure occurs exclusively on the basis of an impairment of diastolic function.

Left ventricular diastolic function in sepsis

Critical Care Medicine, 1990
Although systolic dysfunction of the left ventricle has been characterized in septic shock (SS) and sepsis without shock (SWS), diastolic abnormalities are less well characterized. Diastolic filling was determined using pulsed Doppler transmitral spectral tracings in 13 patients with SS, ten patients with SWS, and 33 normal controls.

Left Ventricular Diastolic Function

Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, 1993
Two-dimensional echocafdiography has gained widespread acceptance I as the procedure of choice to evaluate left ventricular function. In the last decade, the importance of diastolic function in the overall performance of the left ventricle has received much attention.

Left-Ventricular Diastolic Function and Hypertension

Cardiology Clinics, 1995
Left-ventricular diastolic function is influenced by multiple factors in hypertension. These factors include age, left-ventricular hypertrophy, afterload, left-atrial pressure, blood pressure, and myocardial stiffness. The influences of and interactions among these factors change the filling characteristics of the left ventricle and characterize ...

Hypertension and Left Ventricular Diastolic Function

Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 1989
In recent years, there has been increased recognition of the relative importance of abnormalities of diastolic function in patients with essential hypertension. Indeed, diastolic dysfunction may be the earliest indicator of hypertensive heart disease. In this article, the mechanisms governing normal ventricular relaxation and the factors that may cause

Left Ventricular Diastolic Function in Liver Cirrhosis

Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology, 1996
Left ventricular systolic abnormalities have been reported in liver cirrhosis (LC). Diastolic function in cirrhotics, on the contrary, does not seem to have been studied so far.Diastolic function was evaluated in 42 cirrhotic patients and in 16 controls by means of Doppler echocardiography.Compared with the controls, cirrhotics had increased left ...

Left ventricular diastolic function in mitral stenosis

Echocardiography, 2020
AbstractThe assessment of left ventricular (LV) function in the setting of mitral stenosis (MS) has been critically examined for decades. Accurate assessment of aberrations in diastolic function is important as these subjects often present with signs and symptoms of heart failure and pulmonary congestion that cannot be solely explained by the severity ...

Left ventricular diastolic function following myocardial infarction

Current Heart Failure Reports, 2006
An acute myocardial infarction causes a loss of contractile fibers which reduces systolic function. Parallel to the effect on systolic function, a myocardial infarction also impacts diastolic function, but this relationship is not as well understood. The two physiologic phases of diastole, active relaxation and passive filling, are both influenced by ...

Left Ventricular Diastolic Function in the Elderly

The American Journal of Geriatric Cardiology, 2001
Previous studies using pulsed Doppler echocardiography have demonstrated a pattern of abnormal left ventricular relaxation associated with increasing age. Specifically, aging is associated with decreased peak velocity of early diastolic mitral inflow, increased peak velocity of late diastolic inflow, increased isovolumic relaxation time ...

Operations for improving left ventricular diastolic function

Current Opinion in Cardiology, 2016
With a combination of fetal catheter interventions and postnatal catheter and surgical interventions, the left ventricle in patients with hypoplastic left heart can undergo significant increase in size and remodeling to support cardiac output. However, some will have persistent high left atrial pressures resulting in pulmonary edema and high pulmonary ...
