Although increasing attention is being given to Legionella pneumonia in Japan, reports of solitary onset of this disease are scant in Japan. The patient, from whom L. dumoffii was isolated, was a 59-year-old male with no underlying disease. He visited our hospital because of fever and cough, and was admitted to our department for X-ray findings ...

Community-acquired legionnaires' disease (CALD) has dramatically increased in the Legionella urinary antigen (LUA) era. However, its incidence in each country depends on the specific techniques used for the diagnosis of LD and the mandatory reporting of cases to the local health surveillance system.

Although one does not find the origin of the contamination in the human half of the cases of legionellosis, one knows that this disease is the consequence of the almost obligatory contamination of the networks of installations of hot water by Legionella pneumophila, and the inhalation by the man of infected droplets.

This chapter describes the family Legionellaceae, which includes the genera Legionella, Berkiella, Occultobacter, and Nucleophilum. Of these, members of the genus Legionella are predominant human pathogens. The chapter also analyzes the genus name, which was derived from the fact that the first recognized outbreak of infection due to these ...

Numerous reports of endemic legionellosis have been published within the past year. The scope has been expanded to longterm care facilities, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and pediatric hospitals. The institutional water supply has been the source in all reports and aspiration was explicitly linked as the mode of transmission in several reports.

Legionellosis refers to the two clinical syndromes caused by Legionella : Pontiac fever, a benign febrile illness and Legionnaires'disease (or pneumonia). Clinically and radiologically, Legionnaires'disease presents itself as a « typical » pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumonia. Diagnosis is usually made by using urinary antigen testing.
