Length-frequency data approaches to evaluate snapper and grouper fisheries in the Java Sea, Indonesia

Fisheries Research, 2020
Abstract Indonesia is the most important producer country of snapper and grouper species worldwide, with a notable increase in landings over the past decades. The Java Sea is one of the most frequently fished areas for these species in Indonesia, but in 2016 a decrease in landings was observed.

An integrated model for growth incorporating tag–recapture, length–frequency, and direct aging data

Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 2004
A maximum likelihood method for modelling fish growth is presented that integrates data from three key sources of growth information: tag–recapture studies, length–frequency samples from commercial catches, and direct aging data from hard-parts analyses.

Growth parameter estimates for Omani abalone (Haliotis mariae, Wood 1828) using length-frequency data

Fisheries Research, 1997
Abstract Length-frequency data for Omani abalone (Haliotis mariae) from two areas (Sadh and Hadbin) of the Dhofar coast of the Sultanate of Oman were used to fit von Bertalanffy growth curves by ELEFAN, MULTIFAN and Non-Linear Least Square Fitting methods.

Updated catch length frequencies for the Tristan group of islands using factory pack category data

2023
Reliable factory processing records of lobsters caught at all four islands of the Tristan group are available since 2001. These “pack category” data record the number of lobsters that fall into different packing categories. There are two types of product for which data have been collected: “tails” (where only the tails are packed into cartons) and ...

Mixture Model Analysis of Partially Rank‐Ordered Set Samples: Age Groups of Fish from Length‐Frequency Data

Scandinavian Journal of Statistics, 2015
AbstractWe present a novel methodology for estimating the parameters of a finite mixture model (FMM) based on partially rank‐ordered set (PROS) sampling and use it in a fishery application. A PROS sampling design first selects a simple random sample of fish and creates partially rank‐ordered judgement subsets by dividing units into subsets of ...

Assessing the sensitivity of data-limited methods (DLMs) to the estimation of life-history parameters from length–frequency data

Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 2018
Data-limited methods (DLMs) in stock assessment may provide potential critical information for data-limited stock management. However, the sensitivity of those methods to life-history parameters is largely unknown, resulting in extra uncertainty and consequent risks. In the present study, we designed six parallel workflows (WFs) to incorporate classic

Investigating the influence of length–frequency data on the stock assessment of Indian Ocean bigeye tuna

Fisheries Research, 2014
a b s t r a c t Most integrated stock assessment models are fitted to alternative sources of data like indices of abun- dance and length/age composition of catches in specific fisheries. While indices of abundance are often standardized over time, not much attention is paid to the temporal stability of the length/age data.

An eighteenth century commercial length-frequency sample of Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, based on archaeological data

Fisheries Research, 1993
Abstract A length frequency was developed from measurements of 174 cleithra of cod (Gadus morhua) which had been recovered from the wreck of a fishing schooner lost on the coast of Nova Scotia during the 1750s. The fish were probably part of a commercial catch, most likely taken by handlines on the offshore banks in NAFO Divisions 4VsW.

Systematic Errors in Length Frequency Data and their Effect on Age‐Structured Stock Assessment Models and Management

Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, 2009
AbstractLength frequency data are a central component of many statistical age‐structured models, which are used widely to conduct fisheries stock assessments and produce estimates of stock status for management. However, these data can be biased due to systematic errors during the sampling process.
