Primary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is performed when a cataract is removed and an IOL is implanted at the time of cataract surgery. Lensectomy is recommended for any visually significant lens opacity in a child. Patients who are less than 7 months of age are left aphakic in the developed world.

A modified lens glide for intraocular lens implantation

The sheets glide has been narrowed and bent 30 degrees; this model is shorter than the original design. With rotation the bend produces an effective angle up to 85 degrees for hooking the iris at 12 o'clock during glide removal, and thus allowing the superior lens loop to be simultaneously dropped behind the iris.

Anisophoria after implantation of an intraocular lens

After extracapsular cataract extraction, a Simcoe-style posterior chamber intraocular lens was implanted in the left eye of a 69-year-old patient. The visual acuity of the right eye was 20/25 with +3.0 diopter correction. Probably as a result of a biometric error, the left eye was rendered myopic (-1.75 -3.00 X 25 degrees).

Intraocular lens implantation in an underdeveloped country

The results of 152 intraocular lens implantations performed at Mbabane Government Hospital, Swaziland, Africa, on 114 African patients with senile cataracts are presented. Surgery was performed with manual equipment and procedures. Lens implantation was accompanied by a low rate of postoperative complications.
