Convergent losses of arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis in carnivorous plants

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 4, Page 2040-2051, November 2025.
Summary Most land plants form the ancient arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis, while carnivory is a younger trait that evolved in several angiosperm orders. The two biotic interactions similarly help plants acquire mineral nutrients, raising the question of whether they can coexist.

Adaptive plant traits under anthropogenic burning regimes: A database for UK heath and mire plant species

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, Volume 112, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract Premise Humans have used fire to manage landscapes for millennia, but this use of fire is declining in many ecosystems. Understanding how plants respond to these changes is key to predicting ecosystem resilience and impacts on services such as biodiversity and carbon sequestration. However, many ecosystems lack data on plant fire responses.

Venus flytraps' metabolome analysis discloses the metabolic fate of prey animal foodstock

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 123, Issue 3, August 2025.
SUMMARY Carnivorous plants such as the Venus flytrap Dionaea muscipula survive in nutrient‐poor habitats by attracting and consuming animals. Upon deflection of the touch‐sensitive trigger hairs, the trap closes instantly. Panicking prey repeatedly collides with trigger hairs, which activate the endocrine system: mechano‐ and chemosensors translate the

Implications of molecular characters for the phylogeny of the Microbotryaceae (Basidiomycota: Urediniomycetes)

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2006
Background Anther smuts of the basidiomycetous genus Microbotryum on Caryophyllaceae are important model organisms for many biological disciplines. Members of Microbotryum are most commonly found parasitizing the anthers of host plants in the family ...

The carnivorous bladderwort (Utricularia, Lentibulariaceae): a system inflates [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Botany, 2009
Carnivorous plants inhabit nutrient-poor environments, where prominent targets of prey capture are organic nitrogen and phosphorus. Some carnivorous plants also acquire carbon from their victims. A new report focusing on Utricularia, the bladderwort, demonstrates that carbon assimilated from photosynthesis is paradoxically secreted into the trapping ...

Utricularia bremii (Lentibulariaceae) in Poland

open access: yesPolish Botanical Journal, 2015
Abstract Utricularia bremii Heer ex Kölliker has been found in a former sand quarry in Dąbrowa Górnicza (Silesia-Cracow Upland, S Poland). This subatlantic species is very rarely reported from Western and Southern Europe, and extremely rarely from Central Europe.
