Food web trophic control modulates tropical Atlantic reef ecosystems response to marine heat wave intensity and duration

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
In this study we showed that trophic control modulates the effects of marine heatwaves (MHWs) on species biomass dynamics in a tropical and pristine Atlantic reef ecosystem. Our study provides insights into how the strength of predator–prey interactions may generate different outcomes in face of intensified and prolonged MHWs. Abstract Marine heatwaves

Comparing impacts of fragmentation on bird functional and phylogenetic diversity in primary and secondary rainforests

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, EarlyView.
We show that compensatory patterns of species introduction fail to account for the loss of ecosystem functions due to the decline of forest‐dependent birds. As such, conservation policies should be targeted towards species that share traits associated with disturbance sensitivity, such as insectivory, ground foraging and low dispersal ability.

Linking leaf economic spectrum to floral resources along an environmental gradient

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, EarlyView.
Although it is generally assumed that vegetative and reproductive traits are subject to different selection pressures, our results highlight their interconnectedness and suggest that their evolution may be characterised by the balance of different selection factors rather than by independent processes.

Deliberative Theory for Re‐Focusing the Concept, Measurement, and Analysis of Substantive Reasons in Political Discussions

open access: yesConstellations, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Based on theories of deliberative democracy, this article explores the substantive content of reasons as a conceptual tool. Although most studies focus on procedural dimensions, we argue that identifying and mapping substantive reasons contributes to advancing empirical investigation in a theoretically informed and normatively relevant way ...

Victorian Women and the Gendering of Mountaineering in the Alps

open access: yesGender &History, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article explores the gendered segregation of Victorian mountaineering, highlighting how societal norms sought to confine women to passive roles within the alpine landscape. As Elizabeth Le Blond declared, ‘there is no manlier sport in the world than mountaineering’, encapsulating the pervasive attitudes of the era.

Austerity, economic vulnerability, and populism

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Political Science, EarlyView.
Abstract Governments have repeatedly adjusted fiscal policy in recent decades. We examine the political effects of these adjustments in Europe since the 1990s using both district‐level election outcomes and individual‐level voting data. We expect austerity to increase populist votes, but only among economically vulnerable voters, who are hit the ...
