Evaluating DNA quality in Coleoptera and Lepidoptera: Impact of fixation and preservation in various trapping methods

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We examined how various trapping, fixation, and preservation methods affect the DNA quality of Coleoptera and Lepidoptera specimens. We found that propylene glycol and cyanide vapors effectively preserved DNA, whereas brine provided a cost‐efficient alternative.

Discrimination between transient and persistent bacteria harbored in the digestive tract of larval Galleria mellonella

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
The caterpillars of the greater wax moth (Galleria mellonella) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) are emerging models to study innate immunity and plastic biodegradation. Both of these processes are impacted by the associations between the insect host and its gut microbiome. Although bacterial flora harbored by the larvae have been characterized, little is known

Understanding antipredator strategies of insects: Human presence and escape behaviour in Odonata

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
We tested urbanisation effects, along with a range of life‐history, environmental and contextual traits, on tolerance towards humans—measured by flight initiation distance—in 14 Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) Urbanisation had a generally weak effect on Odonata escape behaviour; however, odonates delayed their escape at sites with high human ...

Diet C:N ratio and temperature influence the performance and colouration of tobacco hornworms

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Melanization can help insects deal with environmental temperatures, but melanin synthesis can depend on nutrient availability. We tested whether the diet C:N ratio and temperature influence Manduca sexta performance and colouration. Larvae performed better at the warmer temperature of 27°C compared to 18°C and had a lighter colour when fed a low ...

Female moths call in vain: Streetlights diminish the promise of mating Weibliche Duftstoffe ohne Wirkung: Straßenbeleuchtung reduziert Paarungsaussichten bei Nachtfaltern

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Male moth (Sphinx ligustri L.) flight behaviour was studied in a flight tunnel under varying light‐emitting diode (LED) types and intensities to assess arrival location, flight duration and direction changes. In a homogeneous light environment, all tested LEDs significantly reduced arrival frequency of males at the females compared with a dim light ...
