Different feeding habits influence the activity of digestive enzymes in freshwater fish

open access: yesCiência Rural
: The aim of this study was to verify the activity of some digestive enzymes in four fish species with different feeding habits. Knowledge of these enzymatic activities can help us to understand the species' digestive processes.

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Biological Sciences, 2008
A variabilidade genética de Leporinus lacustris foi estimada a partir de uma população coletada na lagoa do Carão (22o44’S/53o17’W), na planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná.

Spatial variations in fish assemblage structure in a southeastern Brazilian reservoir

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
We assessed the fish assemblage structure and composition of Nova Ponte Reservoir (Araguari River, Upper Paraná Basin, Brazil). We observed significant differences in abundance (p = 0.0003), richness (p = 0.0005) and diversity (p = 0.02) between ...

Cryptic diversity and recent diversification in the Pyrrhulina australis species complex (Characiformes, Lebiasinidae) revealed by mitochondrial DNA

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Pyrrhulina australis Eigenmann & Kennedy, 1903, is widely distributed across the main hydrographic basins of South America. The taxonomic integrity of this species is nevertheless challenged by the lack of clear diagnostic characters, its marked geographic variation and the morphological overlap with its congeners. In this context, the present

Fish Assemblages in an Urbanized Neotropical Basin: Influence of Environmental Factors Across Dry and Rainy Periods

open access: yesInternational Review of Hydrobiology, Volume 111, Issue 2, December 2026.
ABSTRACT This study investigated the effects of season and environmental disturbances on fish communities in neotropical rivers of the Sorocaba basin, a Sub‐Basin of the Paraná River in Southeast Brazil, based on sampling 1196 individuals from 49 species, including two non‐native and one threatened with extinction.

Illuminating the Dark: Using eDNA Metabarcoding to Study the Unique Ichthyofauna of the Furnas Formation Sinkholes

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 4, July–August 2025.
Using eDNA metabarcoding, we assessed fish diversity in isolated sinkholes in southern Brazil, uncovering signs of local extinction and species persistence. This approach offers a non‐invasive tool for biodiversity assessment and informs conservation efforts in unique karst environments.

Length‒Weight and Length‒Length Relationships of Freshwater Fish Species Caught by Professional Fishermen in the Itaipu Reservoir, Brazil

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ichthyology, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Length‒weight relationships (LWRs) and length‒length relationships (LLRs) were estimated for 63 and 58 freshwater fish species, respectively, captured in the Itaipu Reservoir, Paraná River Basin, Paraná State, Brazil. Sampling was carried out from March 1987 to July 2024 at 63 professional fishing sites within the reservoir’s area of influence ...

The 2,4-D herbicide effects on acetylcholinesterase activity and metabolic parameters of piava freshwater fish (Leporinus obtusidens)

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety, 2008
The effects of 2,4-D (1 or 10 mg/L) on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and metabolic parameters were evaluated in piava (Leporinus obtusidens) after 96 h. AChE activity was significantly reduced in the brain at a concentration of 10 mg/L and in the muscle at both concentrations tested.

Statistical distribution models for migratory fish in Jacuí basin, South Brazil

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology
The aim of the present study was to identify the distribution patterns of migratory fishes in the Jacuí river basin (Rio Grande do Sul, South Brazil), proposing a statistical model of presumed distribution based on geomorphologic environmental data ...

The influence of dam construction on a population of Leporinus obtusidens (Valenciennes, 1847) (Pisces, Anostomidae) in the Yacyretá Reservoir (Argentina)

open access: yesFisheries Research, 2005
Abstract A field study of age, growth and mortality of the “boga”, Leporinus obtusidens (Valenciennes, 1847) was carried out in the Yacyreta Reservoir, High Parana River, Argentina. We compared age-structure, length–weight relationships and condition factor coefficients in phases previous (1990–1994) and subsequent (1995–1998) to the reservoir ...
