Abstract Hydroids are one of the most important animal groups colonizing marine macrophytes. This study presents the diversity of hydroid species in plant substrate samples taken from three points of the Sao Sebastiao Channel, southeastern Brazil. The selectivity level of each hydroid species was inferred from the number of its occurrences on each ...

Three Aequorea macrodactyla (Brandt 1835) medusae were found along the Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro coasts. The specimens clearly match the diagnosis of the species, as they have tentacular bulbs with a large abaxial keel and a prominent excretory pore and papilla.

A cladistic analysis of the genera of the family ‘Lafoeidae’ was performed in order to investigate suprageneric classifications and the boundaries of the family, as well as to organise the available morphological data and discuss the possible evolution of some morphological characters.

Isolation and characterisation of 26 microsatellite loci from a widespread tropical hydrozoan, Macrorhynchia phoenicea (Leptothecata, Aglaopheniidae), and cross-amplification in closely related species [PDF]
We isolated and characterized 26 microsatellite loci for Macrorhynchia phoenicea (Busk, 1852), a rather common tropical hydrozoan from the Indo-Pacific. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 4 to 24. The observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.000 to 0.970 and the expected heterozygosity from 0.029 to 0.833.

Abstract In the present study we show that the meristic marginal characters of the hydromedusa Malagazzia carolinae changes through its ontogeny. We additionally present background-data on abundance and size composition spatial temporal dynamics of this poorly-known medusa from five subtropical Brazilian estuaries (∼24–26.5°S).

Seasonal occurrence of Opechona pyriforme metacercariae in the Eirene tenuis population from Laguna Madre, Mexico was analyzed in zooplankton samples collected in October 1997 and January, May, and July 1998. Eirene tenuis medusae were present in May, July, and October, although parasites were found only in October and July samples.

Two species of the genus Schizotricha new to science (Schizotricha crassa sp. nov. and S. southgeorgiae sp. nov.) have been studied. Both species are described and figured and their systematic position amongst the remaining species of the genus is discussed.
