Arboreality in blindsnakes (Typhlopidae) and threadsnakes (Leptotyphlopidae) from Hispaniola

open access: yesCaribbean Herpetology, 2023
Scolecophidian snakes, which include the blind and thread snakes (Miralles et al. 2018), usually have fossorial or ground-dwelling life styles, although some are known to climb rocks or vegetation. Das and Wallach (1998) reviewed cases of arboreality in this group, and additional records have been published since (Bazzano 2007; Murphy et al.

Evolutionary dynamics shape two passive defensive mechanisms in Neotropical snake radiations

open access: yesPhyllomedusa: Journal of Herpetology, 2021
We mapped the distribution of two defensive behaviors (balling and head hiding) of Neotropical snakes to evaluate its distribution in distinct phylogenetic groups. Balling behavior was observed in 58 out of the 167 examined species across seven families.

An Overlooked Habitat‐Dependent Link Between Metabolism and Water Loss in Reptiles

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, Volume 21, Issue 3, Page 709-719, May 2026.
We measured the gas exchange of six lizard and six snake species, under high and low air humidity, and two intriguing patterns emerged. First, although desert species lose less water via evaporation than similar‐sized mesic species under similar conditions, water loss is virtually the same when each is exposed to its natural conditions.
