American Literature, 1970r HE FOLLOWING LETTERS are said to have been written by Daniel 11 D. Leary, one of the owners of the Quaker City, a man described by Mark Twain as a "smooth-faced animated outrage,"' who accompanied that vessel on its cruise to the Mediterranean in I867 with the intention of selling the vessel en route.
