Aberrant Pigmentation in a Schooling Cownose Ray (Rhinoptera bonasus) in Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, USA

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
We report a rare case of aberrant pigmentation in a cownose ray (Rhinoptera bonasus) observed schooling naturally within Chesapeake Bay, Virginia. Drone and in‐water imagery revealed a piebald‐like pattern without any disruption to coordinated group behavior, providing the first in situ evidence that pigmentation anomalies in this species do not ...

Antibiotic Use in Livestock: A Driver of Resistance in Africa and the Path to Safer Alternatives

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 14, Issue 6, December 2025.
The incorporation of antibiotics into animal feeds is one of the drivers of antibiotic resistance, a global One Health challenge. To reduce the burden of antibiotic resistance, the use of alternative growth promoters and drugs must be promoted, as well as sensitization and implementation of regulations.

First records of leucism in eight species of small mammals (Mammalia: Rodentia) [PDF]

open access: yesTherya, 2016
Leucism is a partial hypopigmentary congenital disorder that indicates low levels of genetic diversity and is considered to be an unusual trait in wild populations. In continental America, few cases of abnormal coloration in vertebrates have been recorded.  This feature can increase the selective pressure on individuals who have it, and can result from

Microbiota and Quality Indexes of Commercial Sauerkraut and Fermented Cucumbers

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 6, December 2025.
Secundilactobacillus and Levilactobacillus were found to be significantly correlated with the content of cadaverine and histamine in the sauerkraut and fermented cucumbers. The high level of biogenic amines in the tested market samples indicates the need to monitor them as an indicator of the hygienic condition of fermented products.

Rare Record of Albinism in a New Zealand Fur Seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) Pup With Observations Through the Weaning Period

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 11, November 2025.
This article provides the first known scientific record of albinism in a New Zealand fur seal pup. We describe the individual with a particular focus on its sensory abilities. This individual's birth at a central mainland colony may permit continued study throughout his life, unlike many records of similar conditions in other species.

Colour Confusion: Reviewing Ambiguities in the Identification and Classification of Chromatophore Deficiencies Among Amphibians

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 9, September 2025.
The colour of amphibian skin and eyes is the result of light interacting with multiple chromatophores (xanthophores, iridophores and melanophores), leading to challenges when trying to identify which of these cells are involved in colour abnormalities.
