Antagonism ofTrichodermaisolates againstLeucoagaricus gongylophorus(Singer) Möller

Journal of Basic Microbiology, 2017
Filamentous fungi from the genusTrichodermaare commonly found in soil. They are considered facultative mycoparasites, and are antagonists of other fungi such as the cultivar of leaf‐cutting ants (Leucoagaricus gongylophorus). The aim of the present study was to bioprospectTrichodermaspp.

Biocontrol of Leucoagaricus gongylophorus by Trichoderma asperelloides with implications to ant mini-colony survival

Fungal Biology
Leaf-cutting ants (LCAs) of the genera Atta and Acromyrmex are major agricultural pests in the Americas, relying on their mutualism with the fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus for colony survival. Mycoparasites such as Trichoderma spp. offer promising biocontrol tools by antagonizing this essential symbiont.

Leucoagaricus gongylophorus provides protection for Atta sexdens against plant extracts

2022

Sequencing, assembly, and genomic annotation of Leucoagaricus gongylophorus LEU18496, a dikarya mutualistic species

Molecular Omics
Abstract The basidiomycete fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus is able to grow in the fungus garden of leaf-cutter ants. This mutualistic interaction has driven the evolutionary adaptation of L. gongylophorus, shaping its metabolism to produce enzymes adept at lignocellulosic biomass degradation.

Synergistic effect of aromatic plant essential oils on the ant Acromyrmex balzani (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and antifungal activity on its symbiotic fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus (Agaricales: Agaricaceae)

Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2020
Leaf-cutting ants have great potential for damage to agricultural and forest crops. Although chemical control is the most used method for the management of this pest, more friendly alternative methods have been investigated. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the insecticidal and antifungal potential of essential oils obtained from Aristolochia ...

Growth and enzymatic activity ofLeucoagaricus gongylophorus,a mutualistic fungus isolated from the leaf-cutting antAtta mexicana,on cellulose and lignocellulosic biomass

Letters in Applied Microbiology, 2017
A mutualistic fungus of the leaf-cutting ant Atta mexicana was isolated and identified as Leucoagaricus gongylophorus. This isolate had a close phylogenetic relationship with L. gongylophorus fungi cultivated by other leaf-cutting ants as determined by ITS sequencing. A subcolony started with ~500 A.

Inhibition of Leucoagaricus gongylophorus with Carica papaya: an alternative to control the leaf-cutter ant Acromyrmex octospinosus

International Journal of Pest Management, 2019
The symbiotic association of the leaf-cutter ants with the fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus implies that the negative impact on the fungi will affect the survival of the ants.
