A relational approach to consciousness: categories of level and contents of consciousness [PDF]
Abstract Characterizing consciousness in and of itself is notoriously difficult. Here, we propose an alternative approach to characterize, and eventually define, consciousness through exhaustive descriptions of consciousness’ relationships to all other consciousness. This approach is founded in category theory.

Effectiveness on level of consciousness of non-invasive neuromodulation therapy in patients with disorders of consciousness: a systematic review and meta-analysis [PDF]
BackgroundDisorders of consciousness (DoC) commonly occurs secondary to severe neurological injury. A considerable volume of research has explored the effectiveness of different non-invasive neuromodulation therapy (NINT) on awaking therapy, however ...

Assessing Patients With Altered Level of Consciousness. [PDF]
Patients with alterations in level of consciousness are among the most difficult to assess, so knowledge of how to assess these patients is important for tracking trends and identifying changes. This article discusses methods used to assess patients admitted with an altered level of consciousness and describes the neurological assessment of and ...

Assess the level of consciousness in patients with disorders of consciousness by combining resting-state and auditory-evoked EEG [PDF]
IntroductionElectroencephalography (EEG) can provide objective neural marker for assessing the level of consciousness of patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC), but current research mainly focuses on the EEG features of a single modality, such as

The Influence of Traumatic Axonal Injury in Thalamus and Brainstem on Level of Consciousness at Scene or Admission: A Clinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study. [PDF]
The aim of this study was to investigate how traumatic axonal injury (TAI) lesions in the thalamus, basal ganglia, and brainstem on clinical brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are associated with level of consciousness in the acute phase in patients ...

Are we ever aware of concepts? A critical question for the Global Neuronal Workspace, Integrated Information, and Attended Intermediate-Level Representation theories of consciousness [PDF]
To locate consciousness in the flow of synaptic activity in the brain, we must first locate it in the flow of information processing in the mind. Two different positions have been debated for centuries.

Reality of traffic injuries attributable to preceding decreased level of consciousness [PDF]
Aim Although decreased level of consciousness (DLOC) while driving may lead to serious accidents involving drivers and people around them, including passengers and pedestrians, few studies have assessed traffic injuries attributable to preceding DLOC. We

Posterior cingulate cross-hemispheric functional connectivity predicts the level of consciousness in traumatic brain injury. [PDF]
Previous studies have demonstrated that altered states of consciousness are related to changes in resting state activity in the default-mode network (DMN). Anatomically, the DMN can be divided into anterior and posterior regions.

The ALARM Theory of Consciousness: A Two-Level Theory of Phenomenal Consciousness
The scientific investigation of consciousness generates new findings at a rapid pace. We argue that we need a novel theoretical framework, which we call the ALARM theory of consciousness, in order to account for all central observations.
