Processing correlates of lexical semantic complexity
Cognition, 2003This paper explores how verb meanings that differ in semantic complexity are processed and represented. In particular, we compare eventive verbs, which denote causally structured events, with stative verbs, which denote facts without causal structure.

Societal Complexity and Lexical Growth
Behavior Science Research, 1981In this paper we report a high positive association between societal complexity and size of a language's lexicon in terms of total number of dictionary entries. Small-scale societies have many fewer lexical items than large-scale societies. However, when specialist terms are ex cluded, the correlation between societal complexity and size of lexi con ...

Lexical complexity-driven representation learning
2022Lexical complexity encoding requires multi-granular syntactic and semantic context; however, the currently available representations for lexically challenging NLP shared tasks such as complex phrase and word identification rely solely on word-level properties with either no context or limited contextual attention.

Lexical Structure and Parsing Complexity
Language and Cognitive Processes, 1997In recent work on sentence processing, lexical frequencies have been proposed as a primary mechanism for syntactic and lexical disam biguation. In this paper, we instead focus on the consequences that the structural configuration of lexical knowledge has for the timecourse of parsing. We concentrate on reduced relative clauses and propose a new lexical-

Complex Lexical Units and Automata
2002This paper discusses the problem of disambiguating noun phrases that contain compound words ambiguous with free simple word combinations. Finite-state transducers will be used to both represent the noun phrase ambiguities and to formalize the linguistic constraints that allow the elimination or reduction of the incorrect analyses.

Neural complexity meets lexical complexity
2017Abstract Complexity Theory provides avenues for understanding many aspects of language acquisition and use, including the language neuroscientists use to label the brain and to think about its structure and functions. A major concern for neuroscience has been the mapping of structure to function. The tendency has been to seek one-to-

Lexical Simplification of Complex Scientific Terms
2018 International Conference on Emerging Trends and Innovations In Engineering And Technological Research (ICETIETR), 2018Lexical simplification is the task of replacing a complex term with its simpler alternatives. We propose a system to identify complex scientific terms in a sentence and replace them with simpler substitutes. The proposed system has 4 stages, namely Complex word identification, Substitution generation, Substitution selection and Substitution ranking ...

Imagery, Concreteness, and Lexical Complexity
Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1975Both imageability and lexical complexity are shown to be influential in determining performance in free recall. However, both features may be confounded with an item's concreteness, and all three factors are controlled in a second experiment. Lexical complexity is shown not to have any effect on recall when imageability and concreteness are both ...

Abstract nouns: Imagery versus lexical complexity
Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1972Four types of nouns were used as stimuli in a paired-associate learning experiment: low-imagery nouns that correspond to simple lexical entries (e.g., soul) and low-imagery nouns that may be derived from more basic lexical entries (e.g., explanation); high-imagery nouns that correspond to simple lexical entries (e.g., comrade), and high-imagery nouns ...
