A Unified Multilingual Handwriting Recognition System using multigrams sub-lexical units [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We address the design of a unified multilingual system for handwriting recognition. Most of multi- lingual systems rests on specialized models that are trained on a single language and one of them is selected at test time.

A Novel Spanish Dataset for Financial Education Text Simplification Targeting Visually Impaired Individuals

open access: yesIEEE Access
Automatic Text Simplification (ATS) is a crucial task in natural language processing, aimed at making texts more comprehensible, particularly for specific groups such as individuals with visual impairments.

Effect of verb argument structure on picture naming in children with and without specific language impairment (SLI) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Background: This study investigated verb argument structure effects in children with specific language impairment (SLI). Aims: A picture-naming paradigm was used to compare the response times and naming accuracy for nouns and verbs with differing ...

The effect of informational load on disfluencies in interpreting: a corpus-based regression analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This article attempts to measure the cognitive or informational load in interpreting by modelling the occurrence rate of the speech disfluency uh(m). In a corpus of 107 interpreted and 240 non-interpreted texts, informational load is operationalized in ...

Stress‐Normalized Sensitivity as a Comparative Benchmark for Intrinsically Piezoresistive Nanocomposite Materials in Wearable Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A stress‐normalised sensitivity metric (S = G/Y) is introduced as a materials‐level benchmark for intrinsically piezoresistive nanocomposites. By decoupling electromechanical response (G) from stiffness (Y), the framework enables direct comparison across diverse systems and clarifies design trade‐offs for wearable sensors.

Information Transmission Strategies for Self‐Organized Robotic Aggregation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how information transmission influences the neighbor‐based self‐organized aggregation of swarm robots. We focus specifically on local interactions regarding information transfer and categorize previous studies based on the functions of the information exchanged.

The role of syntactic and lexical complexity in undergraduate writing quality

open access: yesIbérica
This study explores the L2 production of university students enrolled in an English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) course, by means of the analysis of the complexity of their academic writing performance.

Argument structure frames: A lexical complexity metric?

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1991
The number of semantic argument structure frames associated with a verb has been reported to influence ease of processing during language comprehension. The present experiments tested the generality of the argument structure complexity effect with three dependent measures: eye-fixation times, naming latencies, and lexical decision latencies.

Machine‐Learning Decomposition Identifies a Big Two Structure in Human Personality with Distinct Neurocognitive Profiles

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Using machine learning on a mega‐scale global dataset (n = 1,336,840) reveals a robust personality trait architecture beyond the Big Five. A Big Two model, broadly capturing social engagement and internal mentation, defines a geometric space that links personality to neurocognitive profiles.

Lexis or parsing? A corpus-based study of syntactic complexity and its effect on disfluencies in interpreting [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Cognitive load is probably one of the most cited topics in research on simultaneous interpreting, but it is still poorly understood due to the lack of proper empirical tests.
