Syntax-driven semantic frame composition in Lexicalized Tree Adjoining Grammars

open access: yesJournal of Language Modelling, 2014
The grammar framework presented in this paper combines Lexicalized Tree Adjoining Grammar (LTAG) with a (de)compositional frame semantics. We introduce elementary constructions as pairs of elementary LTAG trees and decompositional frames.

Small clause results revisited

open access: yes, 2013
The main purpose of this paper is to show that argument structure constructions like complex telic path of motion constructions (John walked to the store) or complex resultative constructions (The dog barked the chickens awake) are not to be regarded as "

Between-Word Assimilation and Syntax in Child Language Development: a Case Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Previous developmental research has shown that interactions exist between the emergence of connected speech processes and the acquisition of syntax. This study is the first to have investigated these interactions in detail, using a dense data corpus ...

Synthesizing Empirical Research on Learner Metacognition in Second Language Writing

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Linguistics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Despite considerable research interest in learner metacognition in second language (L2) writing, there is not yet a review that synthesizes the existing empirical findings and discusses their implications. To fill the void, this systematic review synthesized 39 empirical studies on learner metacognition in L2 writing and examined their salient

The syntax of small clause predication

open access: yes, 2013
In this paper I put forward and justify a syntactic configuration that I call Complex Small Clause-structure. I show that this single syntactic structure can explain both the semantic value and the syntactic behavior of a range of constructions that up ...

The Effect of Listening Strategy Intervention on the Development of Young Learners’ L2 Listening Skills

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Linguistics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The impact of strategy intervention on second language (L2) listening development has been explored in various contexts; however, research on both implicit and explicit listening strategy interventions for young learners remains limited.

Lexicalized Syntax and Topology for Non-projective Dependency Grammar

open access: yesElectronic Notes in Theoretical Computer Science, 2004
AbstractWe propose a lexicalized formulation of dependency grammar that addresses both immediate dependence and linear precedence. Our approach distinguishes two orthogonal, yet mutually constraining dependency trees: an ID tree of syntactic dependencies and a LP tree of topological dependencies. The ID tree is non-ordered, non-projective and its edges

Towards a unified analysis of the syntax and semantics of get constructions

open access: yes, 2011
PhDThis thesis develops a novel, unified, syntactic and semantic analysis for a range of get constructions including those with adjectival, prepositional and verbal complements.

The layered internal structure and the external syntax of PP [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
This thesis examines the properties of spatial (i.e., locational and directional) Ps within the minimalist framework (Chomsky 1995,1998,1999), which has put an ultimate emphasis on economy in terms of derivation and representation. The principal goals of

Word Associations in a Minoritised Language: The Case of Cymraeg (Welsh)

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Linguistics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As with many research strands in linguistics, word association (WA) literature is dominated by English language data. This paper (i) explores the extent to which methodologies developed to date are applicable to other languages—specifically, Welsh (Cymraeg)—and (ii) investigates what WA analysis can reveal about lexical organisation and ...
