Dominant deer mice show the importance of abundance in competition

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Detecting competitive interactions is important for predicting species responses to environmental change but remains challenging, especially over large scales. Modern coexistence theory predicts that reduced ecological trait overlap promotes coexistence through stabilizing mechanisms, while fitness differences generate competitive asymmetries.

Integrating agent‐based models into the ensemble ecosystem modelling framework: A rewilding case study at the Knepp Estate, UK

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 6, Issue 1, January–March 2025.
In this study, we integrate an agent‐based model (ABM) with an ensemble ecosystem model (EEM) to assess the impacts of rewilding at the Knepp Estate, UK. The ABM‐EEM approach captures spatial and individual‐level dynamics and reveals emergent behaviours, such as increased woodland regeneration in thorny scrubland with large herbivores present.

Exploratory modeling of social‐ecological systems

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 15, Issue 10, October 2024.
Abstract Navigating social‐ecological systems toward sustainable trajectories is an important challenge of the Anthropocene. Models of social‐ecological systems can increase our understanding of how social and ecological subsystems interact, their response to environmental changes, and how their dynamics may be altered by management interventions ...

Understanding an ecological tug of war: Disentangling competition between native and domesticated ungulates

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2024.
Abstract Competition is a complex ecological process involving individual and community interactions at ecological and evolutionary time scales. Individuals within and between species can compete through two mechanisms: exploitative and interference competition. These mechanisms often co‐occur, making it difficult to develop a mechanistic understanding

Lake water chemistry and local adaptation shape NaCl toxicity in Daphnia ambigua

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, Volume 17, Issue 3, March 2024.
Abstract The increasing application of road deicing agents (e.g., NaCl) has caused widespread salinization of freshwater environments. Chronic exposure to toxic NaCl levels can impact freshwater biota at genome to ecosystem scales, yet the degree of harm caused by road salt pollution is likely to vary among habitats and populations.
