In the present paper the approach of the law of Thirlwall was used to study the relation between the economic growth and the external sector of Argentina in period 1970-2003. Thirlwall maintains that the main restriction that has an opened economy to obtain a rate of growth elevated in the long term is its balance of payments (BP).

Capital flows are expected to be important in the process of economic growth for several reasons. One of them is their importance in relaxing the balance of payments constraints as envisaged by Thirlwall’s law, which states that when economic growth takes place, the level of imports also grows.
