Lianas in gaps reduce carbon accumulation in a tropical forest [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Treefall gaps are the “engines of regeneration” in tropical forests and are loci of high tree recruitment, growth, and carbon accumulation. Gaps, however, are also sites of intense competition between lianas and trees, whereby lianas can dramatically ...

Compatible metrics on a manifold and non-local bi-Hamiltonian structures

open access: yes, 2004
Given a flat metric one may generate a local Hamiltonian structure via the fundamental result of Dubrovin and Novikov. More generally, a flat pencil of metrics will generate a local bi-Hamiltonian structure, and with additional quasi-homogeneity ...

Shrubs and trees as natural insect protection for grazing animals in Switzerland and the alpine region: A systematic review of in vitro, in vivo and clinical trials Sträucher und Bäume als natürlicher Insektenschutz für Weidetiere in der Schweiz und im Alpenraum: Eine systematische Literaturübersicht über in vitro‐, in vivo‐ und klinische Studien

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
Biting or irritating insects are a threat to the health and welfare of grazing animals. This systematic review reveals that several shrubs and bushes growing in the alpine area have insecticidal, insect‐repellent and/or attractant properties. The alder Alnus glutinosa, juniper Juniperus communis, spruce Picea abies and walnut Juglans regia are ...

Beyond species means – the intraspecific contribution to global wood density variation

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Wood density is central for estimating vegetation carbon storage and a plant functional trait of great ecological and evolutionary importance. However, the global extent of wood density variation is unclear, especially at the intraspecific level. We assembled the most comprehensive wood density collection to date, including 109 626 records from

Impact of Clear Aligners on the Temporomandibular Joint: A Systematic Review

open access: yesOrthodontics &Craniofacial Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) may experience alterations during orthodontic treatments. Furthermore, gaps in the literature highlight a lack of robust evidence on the impact of clear aligner therapy (CAT) on the TMJ. This review aims to find the current evidence regarding the effects of CAT on the TMJ. Electronic searches were conducted in

Tropical Dry Forest Succession and the Contribution of Lianas to Wood Area Index (WAI) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The transmission and interception of light through the canopy is an important indicator of forest productivity in tropical forest ecosystems, and the amount of light that eventually reaches the forest floor is influenced by its interactions with leaves ...

Stilbenoids in Lianas of Gnetum parvifolium.

open access: yesChemical and Pharmaceutical Bulletin, 2001
Five new stilbene dimers were isolated from the lianas of Gnetum parvifolium in addition to known stilbenoids. The structures of the compounds were established on the basis of spectroscopic evidence, including long-range coupling and nuclear Overhauser effect experiments, in NMR spectrum.
