The Lichen Connections of Black Fungi
Mycopathologia, 2012Many black meristematic fungi persist on rock surfaces-hostile and exposed habitats where high doses of radiation and periods of desiccation alternate with rain and temperature extremes. To cope with these extremes, rock-inhabiting black fungi show phenotypic plasticity and produce melanin as cell wall pigments.

Dehydration and Freezing Resistance of Lichenized Fungi
The poikilohydrous nature of lichens provides them the ability to resist low temperature, deep dehydration and deficit in light irradiance. The process of water uptake can be correlated with the resistance for dehydration below water percolation threshold (fractal exponent characteristic for approximately two-dimensional lattice).
