Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Evaluation of the experience led commissioning in end of life care project

open access: yes, 2012
A pilot Experience Led Commissioning (ELC) for an end of life care project was evaluated independently by the University of Westminster. Overall, the evaluation uncovered favourable reports on the delivery of ELC.

Development of a smartphone-based bone maturity classification algorithm with XAI for beef carcass grading

open access: yesFood Science of Animal Resources
In Korea, beef carcass quality grades are primarily determined based on the loin-eye muscle area and the degree of marbling. However, final grading decisions also consider additional factors, including carcass abnormalities such as the extent of ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Oxfam Cymru and South Riverside Community Development Centre Skills for Life Project: Final evaluation report

open access: yes, 2018
The Skills for Life project was a one-year project focused on supporting predominantly Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) women in Cardiff to “build long-term, lasting outcomes [beyond] moving into entry-level work and beyond ‘first jobs’ (

Use of inpatient systemic chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy and related predictive factors, healthcare resource utilization, and direct hospitalization costs for metastatic urothelial cancer: findings from a real-world retrospective observational study derived from the national hospital discharge claims database in Italy

open access: yesBMC Cancer
Background Recent real-world studies revealed high proportions of patients with metastatic urothelial cancer (mUC) do not receive any systemic therapy. This study describes the demographics, clinical characteristics, treatment rate and related predictive

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Bioeconomic Models and the Formative Evaluation of Fisheries-Related Programs

open access: yes, 2014
Bioeconomics combines methods from the biological study of living resources, particularly population dynamics, with methods of economic analysis. Most applications have been in program design for resource management.

Fasting as an Adjuvant Therapy for Cancer: Mechanism of Action and Clinical Practice

open access: yesBiomolecules
The fundamental biological characteristics of tumor cells are characterized by irregularities in signaling and metabolic pathways, which are evident through increased glucose uptake, altered mitochondrial function, and the ability to evade growth signals.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.
