Computation of life expectancy from incomplete data [PDF]

open access: yesHandbook of Statistics, Elsevier Volume 43, 2020, Pages 379-389, 2018
Estimating the human longevity and computing of life expectancy are central to the population dynamics. These aspects were studied seriously by scientists since fifteenth century, including renowned astronomer Edmund Halley. From basic principles of population dynamics, we propose a method to compute life expectancy from incomplete data.

Terrestrial Life in Light of the Copernican Principle [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Although many solar systems have been discovered, only one example of life is known. Thus, terrestrial life represents merely one data point. Consequently, extrapolating from terrestrial life to life elsewhere in the galaxy and beyond is often seen as a limitation in the search for different forms of life.

Analogy, Mind, and Life [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
I'll show that the kind of analogy between life and information [argue for by authors such as Davies (2000), Walker and Davies (2013), Dyson (1979), Gleick (2011), Kurzweil (2012), Ward (2009)], that seems to be central to the effect that artificial mind may represents an expected advance in the life evolution in Universe, is like the design argument ...

Limiting Behaviour of the Mean Residual Life [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, Vol. 55, No. 1, (2003), pp. 217--226. MR1965973 (2004b:62215), 2004
In survival or reliability studies, the mean residual life or life expectancy is an important characteristic of the model. Here, we study the limiting behaviour of the mean residual life, and derive an asymptotic expansion which can be used to obtain a good approximation for large values of the time variable.

Stochastic differential equation for modelling health related quality of life [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
In this work we propose a stochastic differential equation (SDE) for modelling health related quality of life (HRQoL) over a lifespan. HRQoL is assumed to be bounded between 0 and 1, equivalent to death and perfect health, respectively. Drift and diffusion parameters of the SDE are chosen to mimic decreasing HRQoL over life and ensuring epidemiological

A new method for life table and life expectancy calculation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
The existing life table method needs to calculate the age-specific mortality first, not only has too many and complicated calculation steps, but also introduces the multiple approximation to bring error. This paper redefines the probability of death for the life table as the average probability of death of a group of people born in a certain period at ...

Groundwater age, life expectancy and transit time distributions in advective-dispersive systems: 1. Generalized reservoir theory [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Water Resources 29 (2006) 1267-1291, 2011
We present a methodology for determining reservoir groundwater age and transit time probability distributions in a deterministic manner, considering advective-dispersive transport in steady velocity fields. In a first step, we propose to model the statistical distribution of groundwater age at aquifer scale by means of the classical advection ...

TimePool: Visually Answer "Which and When" Questions On Univariate Time Series [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
When exploring time series datasets, analysts often pose "which and when" questions. For example, with world life expectancy data over one hundred years, they may inquire about the top 10 countries in life expectancy and the time period when they achieved this status, or which countries have had longer life expectancy than Ireland and when.

Accounting for Smoking in Forecasting Mortality and Life Expectancy [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Smoking is one of the main risk factors that has affected human mortality and life expectancy over the past century. Smoking accounts for a large part of the nonlinearities in the growth of life expectancy and of the geographic and sex differences in mortality.

Incidence-based Estimates of Healthy Life Expectancy for the United Kingdom: Coherence between Transition Probabilities and Aggregate Life Tables [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2006
Will the United Kingdom's ageing population be fit and independent, or suffer from greater chronic ill health? Healthy life expectancy is commonly used to assess this: it is an estimate of how many years are lived in good health over the lifespan. This paper examines a means of generating estimates of healthy and unhealthy life expectancy consistent ...
