Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Expanding an abridged life table

open access: yesDemographic Research, 2001
A question of interest in the demographic and actuarial fields is the estimation of the age-specific mortality pattern when data are given in age groups. Data can be provided in such a form usually because of systematic fluctuations caused by age heaping.

Personal insurance and open supplementary pension in Brazil: A study on mortality differentials by education level [PDF]

open access: yesRevista Contabilidade & Finanças
This study aims to verify whether the inequalities by education level found in the population as a whole are also confirmed among those who subscribed to personal insurance and/or open private pension plans in Brazil between 2012 and 2017.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Life-table representations of family dynamics in Sweden, Hungary, and 14 other FFS countries

open access: yesDemographic Research, 2002
In this study, we present a system of descriptions of family-demographic behavior in developed countries. We use life-table techniques in order to describe the experience of men, of women, and of children in processes related to family formation and ...

Life expectancy and survival analysis for companion dogs and cats in Seoul, South Korea

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science
BackgroundInvestigating life expectancy and mortality is crucial for the development of evidence-based health strategies for companion animals. However, relevant studies are lacking in South Korea, possibly because of challenges in collecting mortality ...

A comprehensive database of estimates and forecasts of Spanish sex–age death rates by climate area, income level, and habitat size (2010–2050) [PDF]

open access: yesDemographic Research
BACKGROUND: Analysing mortality is relevant for decision-making. Life tables have traditionally been based on age and sex, assuming homogeneous mortality rates within these groups. This omits other factors that could affect mortality risks.

Generation rates and chemical compositions of waste streams in a typical crewed space habitat [PDF]

open access: yes
A judicious compilation of generation rates and chemical compositions of potential waste feed streams in a typical crewed space habitat was made in connection with the waste-management aspect of NASA's Physical/Chemical Closed-Loop Life Support Program ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...
