Are short product lifetimes ineluctable? An exploration of consumers’ perceptions of lifetime extension strategies

Proceedings of DRS, 2022
There is consensus that product lifetimes are generally decreasing. To create a sustainable society, the circular economy promotes slowing down the use of resources by lengthening product lifetimes. This is especially important for electronic products that are energy-intensive in their production phase and create vast amounts of waste after use.

Persistent Memory Needs Lifetime Extension Techniques

2020 International Conference on Information and Communication Technology Convergence (ICTC), 2020
Recently, some commercial systems start to use persistent memory(PMem). To take full advantage of this new memory, you need to develop PMem-aware applications through persistent memory programming. Unfortunately, PMem developers don’t understand yet that they should consider life span issues as important as performance and consistency.

A Lifetime Extension Framework for Wireless Sensor Networks

2020 43rd International Conference on Telecommunications and Signal Processing (TSP), 2020
Prolonging the lifetime of a wireless sensor network (WSN) is closely related to the energy hole problem where nodes close to the sink node consume more energy than the other nodes, due to their increased traffic load. For tackling the effects of the energy hole problem, a framework is proposed here consisting of two parts.

Extension of the MCP-PMT lifetime

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 2017
Abstract A micro-channel-plate photomultiplier tube (MCP-PMT) is an excellent photon sensor which has a time resolution better than 50 ps. However the lifetime of the photocathode is a major problem of using it under a high background. We developed a square shape multi-anode MCP-PMT for the Belle II TOP counter, and succeeded in extending its ...

Lifetime Extension of Software Execution Subject to Aging

IEEE Transactions on Reliability, 2017
Software aging is a phenomenon of progressive degradation of software execution environment caused by software faults. In this paper, we propose software life-extension as an operational countermeasure against software aging and present the mathematical foundations of software life-extension by means of stochastic modeling.

Current Challenges in the Lifetime Extension of Smartphones

2023
This study focuses on the current challenges in the lifetime extension of smartphones. The factors influencing the lifetime are identified through a literature and sector-specific interviews. Several life cycle stages such as design for durability and repair, business strategies for retail, and use phases are detailed and discussed.

Technology for Extension of Lifetime

Offshore Technology Conference, 2016
Abstract Looking at statistics for subsea producing wells in North America, Brazil and Norway the numbers indicate that approximately 50% of these wells were installed before 2005. Most of them rely completely on copper based communication i.e. no fiber optics installed, or at least not used.

System lifetime extension by battery management

Proceedings of the international conference on Compilers, architecture, and synthesis for embedded systems - CASES '02, 2002
Many portable devices, like laptops and PDAs can be powered by different combinations of two or more battery packs to give the user the possibility to choose an optimal compromise between lifetime and weight/size. The common discharge policy for multiple battery packs is sequential, i.e., the system switches to the second pack when the first one is ...
