On the Lift-off Speed in Journal Bearings
Tribology Letters, 2005The development and exploration of the Stribeck curve have a long history. It originated based on a series of experiments that were devoted to the characterization of the behavior of fluid-film bearings, which proved to be useful for defining the boundary, mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication regimes.

The influence of spiral angle on lift-off speed of face gas seal under start-up [PDF]
The lift-off rotating speed of dry gas seal (SG-DGS) is investigated by conducting an experimental test, and using a theoretical model based on the slip-flow effect. The experimental results show that the mixed lubrication regime is transferred to the hydrodynamic lubrication regime at a smaller lift-off rotational speed for a lower spiral angle.

High-speed simultaneous PLIF/PIV imaging of a lift-off swirling flame under acoustic forcing
Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science, 2021Abstract The detailed understanding of the flow-flame interaction in a swirling flame is crucial for the study of turbine engine combustion. The phase and amplitude of the heat release rate as a function of the frequency and amplitude of the flow-field oscillations determine the thermo-acoustic instability of the combustion system. The responses of a

Abstract This paper reveals lift-off behavior of jet diffusion flames in sub-atmospheric pressures less than 100 kPa, in view of that the current knowledge on this topic is limited for normal pressure conditions. Physically, the variation of ambient pressure may have significant influence on the lift-off behavior of jet diffusion flames due to the ...

Effects of Surface Micro-Geometry On the Lift-Off Speed of an EHL Contact
Tribology Transactions, 2002With decreasing speed the film thickness in an EHL contact decreases. Below a certain speed asperity contact will take place and gradually the contact enters the mixed lubrication regime. Vice-versa, with increasing speed beyond a certain speed the film thickness has reached a level where asperity contacts have become so rare that the contact will be ...

Linearized Flight Dynamics of Vertical Lift-off High Speed Vehicles
AIAA Modeling and Simulation Technologies Conference and Exhibit, 2003This paper discusses the linearized flight dynamics of vertical lift-off high-speed aerospace vehicles, such as missiles, sounding rockets, and satellite launch vehicles. The equations presented are particularly useful for control law design and its validation by testing through simulation.
