Lift-enhancing tabs on swept, three-dimensional high-lift systems

14th Applied Aerodynamics Conference, 1996
A three-dimensional high-lift system was computationally simulated to investigate the effectiveness of lift-enhancing tabs on swept wings. The computations were performed by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on structured, overset grids, and the effects of turbulence were simulated using the one-equation Baldwin-Barth model.

Random Roughness Enhances Lift in Supersonic Flow

Physical Review Letters, 2007
We study the scattering of shock waves by a rough wedge using second-order perturbation analysis and stochastic simulations employed synergistically to cover a large range in correlation length A and amplitude epsilon of the profile roughness (with length d).

High-Lift Enhancement Using Active Flow Control

6th AIAA Flow Control Conference, 2011
The high-lift performance of an airfoil with a single-element flap is enhanced using fluidic actuation based on synthetic jet technology. Acutation is implemented using a spanwise array of individually controlled discrete synthetic jets with variable spanwise spacing that issue in a direction nominally-tangential to the flap immediately upstream of ...

Dry eye after LASIK enhancement by flap lifting

American Journal of Ophthalmology, 2006
ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To determine whether dry eye after LASIK recurs after LASIK enhancement. METHODS: A total of 63 eyes of 42 patients who underwent LASIK enhancement were included in this study. Subjective dry eye symptoms, tear break-up time (BUT), Schirmer test with anesthesia, fluorescein staining of the cornea, and corneal ...

Enhancing the lift under budget constraints

Proceedings of the eleventh ACM SIGKDD international conference on Knowledge discovery in data mining, 2005
A lift curve, with the true positive rate on the y-axis and the customer pull (or contact) rate on the x-axis, is often used to depict the model performance in many data mining applications, especially in the area of customer relationship management (CRM).

High-Lift Enhancement Using Fluidic Actuation

48th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting Including the New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 2010
The performance of an airfoil equipped with a high-lift system based on a single-element flap configuration is enhanced by the manipulation of vorticity concentrations near the airfoil surface using fluidic actuation. The actuation, which is effected downstream of the juncture between the main airfoil body and the flap, leads to a significant extension

Covert-inspired flaps for lift enhancement and stall mitigation

Bioinspiration & Biomimetics, 2021
Even though unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are taking on more expansive roles in military and commercial applications, their adaptability and agility are still inferior to that of their biological counterparts like birds, especially at low and moderate Reynolds numbers.

Lift enhancement by an externally trapped vortex

10th Fluid and Plasmadynamics Conference, 1977
A theoretical study is made of the performance capabilities of a lift concept that utilizes a spanwise vortex over the upper surface of the wing. The vortex is generated by a vertical flap near the leading edge of the wing and maintained by suction through orifices in endplates at the wingtip.

Gurney flap—Lift enhancement, mechanisms and applications

Progress in Aerospace Sciences, 2008
Abstract Since its invention by a race car driver Dan Gurney in 1960s, the Gurney flap has been used to enhance the aerodynamics performance of subsonic and supercritical airfoils, high-lift devices and delta wings. In order to take stock of recent research and development of Gurney flap, we have carried out a review of the characteristics and ...
