AbstractThis unit describes two methods of genotyping DNA sequences containing known nucleotide variations. The first protocol describes a colorimetric method for genotyping DNA samples amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using an oligonucleotide ligation assay (OLA).

Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 1962
Because of the increasing incidence of radical surgery of the head and neck, there have been questions raised regarding the sequelae of ligating the common carotid artery to control hemorrhage. This procedure may have dire consequences, with death and neurologic complications.

Cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) is referred to as the "gold standard" rodent model for abdominal sepsis. CLP creates a continuously leaking, polymicrobial infectious focus in the abdomen. The abdominal cavity is opened under general anesthesia and analgesia and the cecum is exposed, ligated underneath the ileocecal valve, and punctured with a needle.

Postpartum abdominal sterilization by the Pomeroy method or tubal cauterization by laparoscopy are recommended over the procedure of vaginal tubal ligation described by McMaster and Ansari (Obstetrics and Gynecology 38: 44-50. 1971). The abdominal Pomeroy method is quick and laparoscopy requires a shorter hospital stay.

The Lancet, 1971
It has been suggested by W.I.C. Morris (Lancet 1: 706 April 3 1971) that surgeons show failure risks on consent forms. However this would remove the patients peace of mind which is the reason for seeking sterilization. There is legal opinion that the patient need not be told of risk.

The concept of interrupting hepatic arterial flow in man is undergoing change. There is an ever increasing volume of clinical evidence that hepatic artery ligation can be life saving, and a number of well documented cases are related.

Laparoscopic varicocele ligation
International Urology and Nephrology, 1996Varicocele, an abnormal dilatation of the pampiniform plexus, frequently contributes to male factor infertility. We performed laparoscopic varicocelectomy in 20 patients with varicoceles and abnormal seminal findings. The spermatic artery was identified and preserved in 13 patients and was clipped along with the veins in 7 patients including 1 patient ...

Many methods exist to study oncogenic signaling in lymphoma cells, each with certain strengths and weaknesses. The proximity ligation assay (PLA) is a technique used to examine protein-protein interactions in situ. PLA offers many advantages over traditional biochemical approaches to signaling in that it can detect both transient interactions, which ...

Peptide ligation and semisynthesis
Current Opinion in Biotechnology, 1995Semisynthesis is used to create defined analogues of proteins by the chemical manipulation of peptide fragments largely derived from the natural protein and the subsequent reassembly of those fragments into a near-native conformation. In common with the total synthesis of proteins, it requires efficient and non-destructive methods for peptide ...

This is a review of 121 cases of interval vaginal tubal ligations done by fimbriectomy between 1971 and 1979. The technic has proved to be effective, economical, rapid, safe, and simple, and requires only a short convalescence. There have been no subsequent pregnancies or serious postoperative febrile complications.
