A hydraulics-based heuristic strategy for capacity expansion retrofit of distillation systems and an industrial application on a light-ends separation plant

Abstract A new indicator to represent a maximum capacity expansion rate of distillation processes is presented in this article. A hydraulics-based heuristic strategy consisting of three levels is proposed to address the capacity expansion retrofit redesign of distillation systems.

Distillation of the “Light Ends” from Crude Oil in Petroleum Processing

The “light ends” unit is the only process in a refinery configuration that is designed to separate “almost” pure components from the crude oil. Its growth initially resulted from the need of those components such as butanes and propanes to satisfy a market of portable cooking fuel and industrial fuels.
